TIPS-tested baby skincare products - 2007

I am delighted to be able to bring you the final results of the first TIPS testing of baby skincare products. This has taken more than six months of intensive work to complete. As many of you will know, alongside breastfeeding, baby skincare is my other passion and my published work on this subject has helped to change policy within UK maternity units.

There are 50 awards across the following seven categories and also three special awards (click on one of the links below to find out more):

Baby bath

Overview

This trial is the largest carried out by my team of independent parent testers so far. The statistics of this trial are amazing in themselves with almost £2,000 worth of products sent out to 68 testers. 11 manufacturers kindly supplied 301 samples (52 products). Testers completed and returned 283 score sheets (an amazing 94% return rate). Well done to everyone.
I would like to thank each and every supplier for providing the samples free of charge for my testers to keep. Without their co-operation and confidence in the TIPS testing programme, this in-depth study of the best available baby products on the market today would not have been possible. I would also like to thank my team of dedicated parent testers whose comments and detailed feedback allow the TIPS testing programme to achieve a level of independence and impartiality that is second to none. I hope this will provide parents with a definitive list of products that are all safe to use and all comply with a water-only approach to baby skincare for the first month of life.

Methodology

Testers received samples with: detailed guidelines explaining exactly what to look for in each product when carrying out the tests; score sheets with information about price, brand, distributor and ingredients for the product.
The following text was included in the testers’ guidelines: (Test one brand at a time, for as long as you feel necessary, before completing each score sheet. Please allow a few days between testing each brand).
As you probably know, I am passionate about baby skincare. I have been working on baby skincare for over 10 years. In 1996 I saw a short article in a journal asking whether we were using too many skincare products. This prompted me to research this subject in greater depth. Many of my papers have been published in midwifery journals (these are all available on www.tipslimited.com if you fancy a long read!). My work in this field has resulted in a change of policy in an ever increasing number of maternity units all over the UK. It is also backed up by recent national guidelines published by NICE (www.nice.org.uk ).
The basis of my theory is that everything placed on, in or around a baby‘s skin has the potential to affect the delicate natural barrier. If this happens, rashes, spots or worse still asthma, eczema and related allergies are likely to follow. The incidence of these conditions has increased year on year in parallel with the increase in sales of baby skincare products. It seems fair to assume this is no co-incidence.
My approach to baby skincare is to keep exposure to potentially irritating ingredients to a minimum in the early weeks of life (this is why I have decide not to test any products on babies under six months of age, even though they can be used after one month). This allows time for the natural skin barrier to develop. When products are introduced they are therefore less likely to sensitise young skin and cause problems. All companies supplying products for this category advise their customers that it is safer to use water only for the first month of life - this forms the basis of my new guidelines.
My Babycare - back to basics™ leaflet is now in its fourth version and contains the most up to date advice on all things relating to baby skincare. A copy is enclosed so please read it before you start testing.
I am thrilled to say that I have secured some wonderful brands for you to test. They all comply with my strict criteria and none of them contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), propylene glycol, parabens or phathates. I would prefer to see these ingredients excluded from formulations of baby products, as safer alternatives exist on the market. After all a baby’s skin is the most delicate it will ever be and we need to care for it accordingly. Where possible all products included for testing contain mostly natural ingredients, some are completely organic in origin. I realise this can make products very expensive so I have tried to include products that are safe to use as well as great value for money.
Please read any instructions that are included with your samples before you begin testing.
Below is a list of the criteria you may like to take into consideration when testing breast pads and breast treatments:
• Design: the design of the bottle or packaging may not seem vital to the success of baby skincare products. However, the shape of a bottle or the way the product is dispensed may impact on its ease of use. The use of recyclable packaging or glass rather than plastic is also another consideration.
• Information on packaging or supplied with the product: does the manufacturer include a full list of ingredients? Does the manufacturer give advice on how or when it is safe to use the product? Do they give you alternative uses for their product other than the obvious ones? Is advice or resources on how best to care for your baby’s skin or where to get expert help included?
• Information online: does the website provide a full list of ingredients for each product in the range? Does the manufacturer support the advice that only plain water should be used on newborn skin and for at least the first month of life? Does the website provide parents with useful tips?
• Feel and texture of product: does the product feel too thick or too thin? Does it have a grainy texture or does it have a sticky consistency? Is it easy to apply?
• Fragrance: does the product smell good enough to eat or would rather not sit too close to it? In order to be safe products should have minimal perfumes. This can be hard when we like to smell nice. Has this product got the balance right or could it be better?
• Ingredients: are they safe to use on young skin? Does the product contain artificial ingredients or is it completely natural in origin?
• Effectiveness: does the product do what it says on the pack? Did it cure the condition it was supposed to treat?
• Recommendation: would you recommend this product to other parents?
• Ease of use: some products may work well but be fiddly to use, while others may be easy to use but ineffective. Each tester should comment on what works best for them.
• Price: the RRP cost of each product will be supplied on your score sheet. It will then be up to each tester to decide whether this is cheap, expensive or value-for-money. In the final reviews I have added a price per millilitre so that it is easier to make a comparison.
• Availability: online, by mail order and on the high street.
• Adverse reactions: did you notice any adverse reactions when using this product (this may include rashes, spots or red areas caused by the product you are testing).

Containing organic lavender this baby bath was effective with extremely long lasting bubbles. It lost points for being manufactured outside the UK, as this increases its carbon footprint. One Tester especially liked the language used on pack which seems to be written so children can read it. This is a common theme throughout the whole range.

Equal fourth – Baby neutral – diaper cream
RRP: £5.45 for 50mls

Overall score: 77%
Award: Highly commended

Free from artificial ingredients this excellent product is designed for allergic and extremely sensitive skin. Manufactured in Germany, this range has often been recommended by the highly critical consumer magazine OKO TEST. This lovely cream really did protect against nappy rash, was easy to use and absorbed well leaving a silky soft barrier.

Fifth – Earth Friendly Baby – Red Clover nappy cream
RRP: £5.49 for 113 grams
Cost per ml: 4.85p
Supplied by www.earthfriendlybaby.co.uk
Overall score: 74 per cent
Tested August 2008
Award: Highly commended

Harnessing the anti-inflammatory properties of red clover, this natural nappy cream was enjoyed by all Testers. It not only provided an excellent barrier but helped to treat red bottoms with just a few applications. It was easy to use and absorbed well into the skin.
Earth Friendly Baby – Red Clover nappy cream is available in two sizes of tube (one for home and one for travelling). This makes the product great value for money and especially useful for the busy parent.

Sixth– Bepanthen Ointment
RRP: £5.99 for 100 grams
Cost per ml: 5.99p
Supplied by www.bepanthen.co.uk
Overall score: 73%
Tested June 2008
Award: Highly commended

Testers complimented Bepanthen® ointment on its consistency, ease of use, pleasant fragrance and the fact that a little went a long way. It was interesting to see that Testers who were using cloth nappies found Bepanthen® works well as a barrier cream. Unlike other ointments, Bepanthen® does not reduce the absorbency of cloth nappies.
This water-in-oil emulsion is free from fragrance, preservative, colour and antiseptic ingredients. It can be used at every nappy change and is even suitable for premature infants. It provides a transparent layer which allows the skin’s own protective barrier to remain intact.
While researching this ointment I came across a tattoo forum that actively promotes the use of this product to protect tattoos during the healing process. This is because Bepanthen® lets the skin breathe.
Testers’ comments were overwhelmingly positive. One Tester echoed other Testers’ feedback by saying: “I used it following my baby’s booster injections as his bottom was showing signs of getting irritated – Bepanthen® cleared it in 24 hours”.
Bepanthen® is excellent value for money. Great information on pack is complemented by a comprehensive website which includes FAQs on issues relating to nappy rash. Bepanthen® certainly seems to tick all the boxes which is why we are delighted to award it a TIPS Highly commended.

Testers raved about this gorgeous fragrance (totally natural in origin). This natural product really did keep the nappy area soft and protected. Children’s shampoo: 5 awards

First – Halos n Horns Berry Burst shampoo-detangler
RRP: £2.29 for 200mls
Cost per ml: 1.14p
Supplied by www.halosnhorns.co.uk
Overall score: 81%
Award: Best of the best

I was thrilled that the Halos n Horns range scored so highly among parent testers. I have been baby skincare advisor for this brand since its launch in 2005 and have applauded their dedication to providing safe affordable skincare formulations. They were the first manufacturer to state on pack that the use of products should be avoided for babies under one month of age. At the time this was groundbreaking and it is my hope that other manufacturers will follow their lead. This shampoo is a clear winner: it has a fresh and fruity smell, is easy to dispense right down to the last drop and leaves hair clean, shiny and tangle free.

Second – Baby & kinder shampoo
RRP: £6.00 for 200mls
Cost per ml: 3p
Supplied by www.lavera.co.uk
Overall score: 80%
Award: Best eco-friendly

A wonderful shampoo that is totally natural and free from harsh ingredients. It was easy to use, lathered well and left hair feeling silky smooth. Universally praised by parent testers, this is a hidden gem within the baby skincare market which I am more than happy to promote to new parents everywhere. As a brand this is definitely one to watch.

Third – Essential Care Gentle wash and shampoo
RRP: £9 for 200ml
Cost per ml: 4.5p
Supplied by www.essential-care.co.uk
Overall score: 78%
Award: Best organic

There are few truly organic products on the market. This is the reason why I am delighted to award this one Best Organic shampoo. Testers loved this product which has a gorgeous fragrance and is easy to use. The quality of the ingredients makes this product an obvious choice for the environmentally conscious or anyone with sensitive skin. Instructions and information provided are excellent and in line with the latest advice on safe baby skincare.

Fourth – Halos n Horns Mango Melon shampoo-conditioner
RRP: £2.29 for 200mls
cost per ml: 1.14p
Supplied by www.halosnhorns.co.uk
Overall score: 78%
Award: Best budget

Once again a lovely product that smells good enough to eat, contains safe ingredients and is truly great value for money. What more could anyone ask for? It is excellent for those with dry skin conditions, as all products in the range are free from sulphates, parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol and MIT.

Fifth– Earth Friendly Kids – Minty Lavender shampoo
RRP: £3.99 for 250mls
Cost per ml: 1.59p
Supplied by www.earthfriendlybaby.co.uk
Overall score: 75 per cent
Tested August 2008
Award: Highly commended

Testers really enjoyed this safe formulation that not only doubled as a body wash but left the scalp flake free. The minty fragrance gives it a refreshing clean smell without being overpowering. So impressed was one Tester that she used it on herself with great results! The whole range of Earth Friendly Baby and Earth Friendly Kids is now available in branches of John Lewis and Waitrose making this one of the easier natural ranges to source.

Children’s toothpaste: 4 awards

First - Weleda Children’s tooth gel
RRP:£2.50 for 50mls
Overall score: 80%
www.weleda.co.uk
Tested May 2008
Award: Editor's choice

This all-natural tooth gel contains only the safest ingredients. It is free from any detergents, bleaches, foam boosters, whiteners, artificial colours, flavours or synthetic additives. Testers were unanimous in their praise for this product. From its subtle minty taste and fluoride-free formulation to its great cleaning power this is an all-round winner. Weleda Children’s tooth gel does not foam, which means that there is no need to spit. This is especially important as babies are unable to spit, and should they swallow some tooth gel, this is completely harmless. Although this product is for children, many parent Testers also enjoyed using it (an adult Weleda toothpaste is available). Testers were reassured by the eco-friendly credentials of this product, and its suitability for vegetarians and vegans too.

Second – Halos n Horns toothy fruity toothpaste
RRP: £2.29 for 75mls
Cost per ml: 3.05p
Supplied by www.halosnhorns.co.uk
Overall score: 79%
Award: Best of the best

Great packaging designed with children in mind. It has a lovely strawberry smell too which is not too overpowering but does make children keen to have their teeth cleaned. It is easy to dispense and mixes well with water to cover the teeth evenly. Unlike toothpastes containing foaming agents, this product does not froth up so children do not swallow as much product. Unlike most eco-friendly toothpastes, this brand does contain fluoride (in smaller amounts than regular toothpastes) which is great because it still provides protection without the worry of unnecessary ingredients. Overall this toothpaste gives you the best of both worlds which is why it came out on top.

Third – Organic children mandarin toothpaste
RRP: £3.25 for 50mls
Cost per ml: 6.5p
Supplied by www.organicbabies.com
Overall score: 75%
Award: Best eco-friendly

The packaging is informative but clever enough to catch a child’s attention. The two flavours in this range are not too sweet and the consistency, whilst not being too frothy, does coat the teeth well, leaving them clean and fresh. As long as there is still debate over the safety of fluoride in domestic water supplies, it is great to have the option of using non-fluoride toothpastes for young children so there is no worry over swallowing too much product. A little goes a long way so the price is value for money. [back to top]

Fourth – Organic children spearmint and aloe vera toothpaste
RRP: £3.25 per 50mls
Cost per ml: 6.5p
Supplied by www.organicbabies.com
Overall score: 74%
Award: Best eco-friendly

Like its sister product, the mandarin toothpaste, this is a great alternative to regular toothpastes and ideal for children to use. It comes with the expertise of an excellent company who are dedicated to safe and environmentally friendly products. This toothpaste is easy to use, tastes good and is free from fluoride and all foaming agents.

Testers’ top product
Aromababy Mother and child massage oil (89%)
www.aromababy.com

This was easy to award and represents the top scoring product from 301 samples sent out. Congratulations to Aromababy for an excellent product that combines ease of use by means of a pump dispenser and a pure quality oil that has many uses for both mother and baby.

Testers’ top brand
Weleda (UK) Ltd
www.weleda.co.uk

This award was a little more difficult to collate and involved lots of maths to add up the final scores in each brand which (for consistency and fairness) were then divided by the number of samples submitted. Comments from parent testers were also taken into consideration and congratulations go to the Weleda Baby range as the overall favourite. A beautifully presented range of products manufactured using only the finest ingredients by a company committed to restoring health and maintaining wellbeing naturally, ethically, safely, without animal experimentation and without damaging the environment.

Editor’s award
Lavera (UK) Ltd
www.lavera.co.uk

I was first introduced to this lovely range of mother and baby products by one of my parent testers. She raved about it for clearing up nappy rash and being kind to delicate skin. My contact with the UK distributor of this company has always been extremely positive and nothing was too much trouble when it came to providing samples for testing. I love the simplicity of the two ranges featured (there are many more products available on their website including cosmetics, anti-ageing and sun protection) and the quality of the ingredients cannot be disputed. With a genuine concern for nature and openness to new ideas Lavera has been rated as 'Recommended' over 130 times by the critical German consumer magazine OKO TEST. This is why I am delighted to present this brand with my ‘Editor’s choice’ award which I hope will highlight this up and coming range.

Without exception I would like to applaud the response from every Company who kindly sent me samples to test. Such efficient communication made my job easy and I would like to thank all parties involved.
