Save the Children World Marathon Challenge

logo

Save the Children calls on UK schools to take part in a race against hunger

Save the Children is urging teachers across the UK to help them highlight the challenges faced by children across the World by involving their schools and pupils in the World Marathon Challenge.

The World Marathon Challenge is taking place on World Food Day, Tuesday 16 October 2012, and is a simultaneous relay in which teams of 11 to 13-year-olds from across the globe race against each other over a full marathon distance of 42.195km.

Save the Children hopes that 40,000 children will take part in the World Marathon Challenge from over 30 countries. The event aims to enrich children’s understanding of issues in their own communities and the wider world, and connect to a critical cause – saving children's lives.

Save the Children is creating teacher’s packs to explain to 11-13 year olds how children can make a difference in the global hunger crisis. The teaching pack includes three lesson plans educating children on the issues surrounding malnutrition and is ideal for those organizing a World Marathon Challenge event on World Food Day.

  • To register your school or for more information on the World Marathon Challenge and detailed lesson plans, please visit: www.savethechildren.org.uk/wmc.

Launch of Freedom for Birth - a 60 minute campaigning documentary that re-frames childbirth as the most pressing global human rights issue today.

illustration

The global release of Freedom For Birth aims to raise awareness of human rights in childbirth. Things will only change if people around the world take a stand and say 'No more'. This documentary and all the media coverage it generates will hopefully help achieve this. However this can only happen if supporters help to spread the message far and wide. Together we can play a part to make birth better for all women around the world.

Engaging Fathers as Partners - Delivering for families in the ‘Big Society

11 November 2010

The Royal Horticultural Halls, London

logo

Hear first hand from Tim Loughton, Minister for Children and Families, on the impact of the Comprehensive Spending Review. Mr Loughton will present the prestigious Fatherhood Institute 'Fathers Included' award and £500 prize to this year's winner.

And you can hear from service providers, as well as dads themselves, from a range of settings - statutory and voluntary, early years, schools and beyond.  Find out how to work in partnership with fathers as service users and volunteers... hear the latest evidence on the impact of engaging with fathers in families where children are vulnerable or at risk... and explore how to promote shared parenting.

Workshop speakers include:

Gavin Swann, Head of Children in Need Islington Children’s Social Care; St Michaels Fellowship in London;  Staff and fathers from Liverpool early years and health services; Dr Mark Osborn - who has a long history of working in teenage pregnancy services;  Stag Lane Primary School in Harrow, which has been working with Campaign for Learning to develop wonderful, creative animation projects to engage fathers in schools and family learning and improve children’s attainment; The Fatherhood Institute with Portsmouth Local Authority.

Hear why helping couples should be a big priority - Adrienne Burgess, Fatherhood Institute Head of Research – one of the world’s foremost experts on fatherhood - will present our latest research looking at policies and practice across the UK and Europe in engaging fathers and mothers.

In Britain, we are bad at preparing couples for this transition or helping them negotiate it; and our record with expectant and new fathers is particularly poor. In her presentation, Ms Burgess will talk about what can be done to remedy this; what really good ‘preparation for parenthood’ might look like; and how fathers and mothers can be helped to share the care of their children more equally – an aspiration that almost all of them hold, and which is so often unfulfilled.

Note:  This conference contributes 6 hours of evidenced learning for social workers, health visitors and other professionals who have continuing professional development requirements.

Book your place at the conference here..

Skydive fundraiser - Hinton Airfield Northamptonshire

8 June 2010

baby Owen baby Owen

Parent Tester's second son Owen decided to surprise Mum and Dad with an early appearance just before Christmas......a whole 9 weeks early!?!  Thanks to the dedicated staff in Gosset Ward - the Special Care Baby Unit at Northampton hospital - baby Owen was able to 'graduate' from the ward after just 26 days and go home.

And now Mum Kate wants to help raise funds for Gosset Ward. So - in spite of her fear of heights - she has decided to take the plunge ('scuse the pun!!!) and throw herself out of a perfectly good plane and hurtle towards the earth....

If you're in the area, come along to Hinton Airfield Northamptonshire between 9am-3pm. There will be cake stands, raffles and competitions etc to raise a few extra pennies and keep people busy while waiting for 12 parents, nurses and doctors to fall from the sky!

You can also make a donation online here....

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Fathers' Story Week

14 - 20 June 2010

company logo fathers week graphic

Timed to coincide with Fathers’ Day (20 June 2010), Fathers’ Story Week (14 to 20 June 2010) is a fantastic opportunity for nurseries, pre-schools and primary schools to get fathers and children working and spending time together in support of their children’s learning and development.

We hope that you and your team will get involved, have fun and at the same time get to know more of the dads in your locality.  Please pass this e-mail onto at least 2 colleagues in early years and schools so that they too can get involved and make a positive impact on father-child and parental relationships.

  • To find out more visit the Fathers’ Story Week website at www.fathersstoryweek.org to download FREE resources, lesson and session plans and ideas to cover a whole week’s worth of activities, which will be fun for children and their fathers, grandfathers and father-figures.
