Welcome to the eight TIPS e-newsletter. As always there is a lot to tell you about.

Firstly can I thank everyone who voted for us in the BabyGROE Natural Choice Awards. I am thrilled that we have been nominated not just for one but for two categories (Ethical Business and Health professional - Midwife). The award ceremony will take place in Chester on 13 June so here’s hoping that’s our lucky day!

We have just added our results for ergonomic baby baths and cuddle towels online so check these out for the very best in bath time fun. If you are looking for the very best baby wipes then go to our ‘Results just in’ page where you will be able to read about the latest trial of the brand new Jackson Reece baby wipe. I was delighted to join Colin and Janet at the Glasgow Baby Show where I gave baby skincare advice to parents and met up with lots of TIPS testers who popped along to say hi. Thank you for your support and it was great to meet you all face-to-face.

As always, the TIPS parent testers (now over 260 of you!) have been busy with new trials and we await results of the following trials: six decongestants, one tooth gel, a thermometer soother, a nipple cream, two new nappy creams and more baby skincare products.

Here at TIPS we want to feature all kinds of ‘family’ shots so this time we have a wonderful picture of single mum Kirsten breastfeeding her gorgeous baby girl . We met at the Glasgow Baby Show and you can read about Kirsten’s story, as recently featured in the news. Don’t forget to check out the latest TIPS bump, baby and toddler too. Please send me your pictures and if you are featured we will send you a personally dedicated Breastfeeding: the essential guide as a thank you.

You can still check out our FAQs on breastfeeding and baby skincare but read on to see my top tips for our featured websitesevents, book reviewarticlepodcastsCD review (new) and of course the latest TIPS competition winners. Remember that TIPS have a regular e-competition, e-newslettercompetition and numerous e-newsletter mini-competitions – do give them all a go. Read on for details of some wonderful new prizes on offer.

Remember if you’re not ‘in’ you can’t win!

Happy testing!

tipsducktipsduckFeatured book :: Call the Midwifetipsducktipsduck

Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth

CallMidwifeCover

This is a true gem of a book and I would highly recommend it to anyone, even if you have no experience of midwifery or childbirth. It is beautifully written with a poignancy that is, at times, utterly heartbreaking. As a midwife and mother I could relate to every story but it is the honesty and clarity of detail that shines through every page. I defy anyone to read this and not be deeply touched by the courage and strength of the real people featured. The stories are interlaced within the historically accurate backdrop of life in the St Nonnatus Convent and charts the early midwifery life of the author Jennifer Worth. Do not miss out on this wonderful read.

I am delighted to be joining my friends from Bickiepegs at the midwifery event of the year. I look forward to meeting midwives from all over the world at this landmark conference where I will be giving away signed copies of my book and discussing my work on cup feeding.
The ICM Triennial Congress is an international event where midwives from all over the world come together to informally network, and share knowledge and experience by means of an outstanding scientific and professional programme. Together with the ICM, the Royal College of Midwives looks forward to delivering a truly memorable congress focused on the global impact and importance of midwives to women and the newborn across the globe.

tipsducktipsduckFeatured article :: Cord blood banking - Midris Digesttipsducktipsduck

Following on from our featured event, I am delighted to announce that my article on cord blood banking will be the ‘Hot Topic’ in the June issue of Midirs Digest. This will be available from the Midirs stand - number 54 (Silver sponsors of the ICM). This is yet another new departure for me and my aim is to give midwives an overview of this fascinating subject which is highly emotive. I include the history, international legislation in place, UK recommendations for practice and how cord blood banking differs between public and private organisations. I also highlight the issues surrounding UCB collection and the potential for future therapies within this pioneering area of science. The full reference for this article is:

Joyful Pregnancy Double CD and Blissful Birth Double CD
By Diviniti Publishing (www.hypnosisaudio.comwww.imperfectlynatural.com)

JoyfulPregnancyCDBlissfulBirthCD

On CD1 of Joyful Pregnancy and on CD1 of Blissful Birth, Janey Lee Grace (author of the Imperfectly Natural books and Radio 2 presenter) talks about her experiences of pregnancy and birth. She also gives tips on how to keep healthy and achieve as natural a birth as possible.
On CD2 of each set, Glenn Harold, clinical hypnotherapist, guides you through hypnotherapy sessions. These are designed to relax you during pregnancy and prepare you for labour, as well as help you make time to relax and recover after your baby’s birth.

I have read both of Janey Lee Grace‘s books. This made listening to her talk about her pregnancies and births even more interesting. On CDs 1, Janey gives good advice about healthy eating and natural living, most of which is included in her books. She also describes the visualisation techniques she used during labour and I thought this was really useful. Janey’s explanation was very clear and all pregnant women could easily adopt this technique to very good effect during labour. I really wish this CD had been available before the birth of my daughters.
The practical audio information on CDs 1 is great but it would have been nice to have some video content too. Janey talks about natural skincare and alternative therapies and it would have been lovely to see examples of these as well as listen to her talk about them. There are several hypnotherapy sessions on CDs 2. Joyful Pregnancy has one 30 minute session that can be used throughout pregnancy. CD 2 of Blissful Birth has two sessions: one for the last few weeks of pregnancy and one to be used after your baby’s birth. I listened to each session several times and found that I enjoyed them more each time. Once I got used to Glenn’s voice, I found him very relaxing and despite having lots of other things to think about I always felt very relaxed after listening one of the sessions. Glenn gives lots of positive affirmations to think about according to the stage of pregnancy you are at. With soothing music and Glenn’s clear voice it is very easy to block out other thoughts. I was induced with my second daughter and had to stay in hospital throughout my labour. These CDs would have been absolutely perfect – I could have put my headphones on, listened to Glenn and completely shut out all the things that were going on around me in the labour ward. They would have been useful during my first labour too. I find it difficult to switch off in busy places, but Glenn’s hypnotherapy sessions would definitely have helped me relax while I was in labour in hospital. They are all very positive and would have helped calm my first time mum nerves!
Glenn advises to listen to the relevant hypnotherapy session once a day. In my experience, it may difficult for most mums-to-be to do this. During my first pregnancy I had a very long maternity leave, and plenty of time. Second time around I was a very busy mum with a toddler and very little time to myself. Although it would be nice to listen to a session every day, I think every other day or a few times a week is more realistic.
Joyful Pregnancy and Blissful Birth Double CDs each cost £14.95. I think this is excellent value for money. They contain a lot of useful information and the hypnotherapy sessions are good - so they will be used over and over again throughout your pregnancy. I did consider hypnotherapy during my second pregnancy but sessions were just too expensive. With the Joyful Pregnancy and Blissful Birth Double CD sets you can enjoy the benefits of hypnotherapy without spending a lot of money.
A third CD in the series is called Preparing for Pregnancy. This will be released shortly. [back to top]

tipsducktipsduckFeatured podcast :: Kamillosantipsducktipsduck

kamillosanLogo

I was lucky to be invited by Kamillosan (winner of a recent ‘Highly commended’ TIPS Award for their nipple ointment) to take part in a radio day on breastfeeding issues in readiness for National Breastfeeding Awareness Week (11 – 17 May). You can read about the day ‘here’. The good news is that we were able to feature breastfeeding in a positive light (this is all too rare these days!). We were also able to give advice and tips on how to support and encourage new mums in the early weeks of feeding, when confidence may need a boost. Over the coming months, I will be working closely with Kamillosan to help provide commonsense, evidence-based materials relating to breastfeeding support for new parents (this includes Dads too).

Boobe Buddies -competition

I have managed to organise a unique prize for the winner of this newsletter competition. In the TIPS e-newsletter 7,
I told you about Pip Wheelwright and her inspiring story about her Boobie Buddie breastfeeding dolls. A limited supply of her wonderful dolls (now fully safety tested) has just reached the UK and Pip has generously agreed to offer us not only one but two pairs of dolls (one blonde and one ethnic) up for grabs (worth £82). These really are the most innovative dolls to hit the market and their ingenious use of magnets allows children to role play by letting the dolls hold hands, kiss and breastfeed (there is a mummy and a baby dolly in each set). So if you wish to win one of these amazing doll sets all you have to do is answer the following question:
How tall is the baby doll in the set?(For more details go to boobiebuddiesbfdolls where you will find the answer on the ‘doll variant page’) Email your answers to Brigitte. We will announce the winner in newsletter 8.
