:: tipsducktipsduckAppeal ** :: Red Nose Day 2011 for Comic Relieftipsducktipsduck

Do something funny for money...buy red noses...buy T-shirts...organise events...

logo

Red Nose Day 2011 is heading your way on Friday 18 March when the great British public will once again be asked to ‘Do Something Funny for Money’.

Comic Relief was launched on Christmas Day in 1985, live on BBC One. At that time, a devastating famine was crippling Ethiopia and something had to be done. That something was Comic Relief.  The idea was simple: Comic Relief would make people laugh while they raised money to help people in desperate need. Before too long, Red Nose Day was created and the first ever event in 1988 raised a staggering £15m. To date, twelve Red Nose Days have raised more than £500m. That money has helped, and is helping, to support people and communities in dire need both in the UK and Africa.

Red Nose Day essentials and T-shirts

Cook books and other branded goodies are available from Oxfam and Sainsbury’s stores. This year’s mischievous monster red noses are called Chucklechomp, Honkus and Captain Conk.

Vivienne Westwood designer T-shirts are on sale nationwide at TKMaxx stores. You can get a special edition mother and baby elephant print T-shirt for children and even a matching babygroe with baby elephant for your youngest supporter. All T-shirts are made from 100% organic fair-trade cotton.

To find out how you can join in the fun go to www.rednoseday.com

TIPS breast pads and treatments 2011 trial - reviews now online!

products

We had tested breast pads and treatments back in 2007 - this was the first nationwide test carried out by the TIPS Awards Scheme.

Twelve products were selected for this trial: 6 breast pads and 6 breast treatments. 120 samples, supplied by 11 manufacturers were sent to 47 Mums breastfeeding babies from birth to over 3 years of age.

Participants commented on the products using a detailed questionnaire. The return rate was 84 per cent and we received almost 3000 comments to help us assess the products.

Many aspects of design and formulation must be taken into account when evaluating these seemingly simple products. A well-designed breast pad or breast treatment will fulfil all the needs of mum and baby and should:

  • come with a list of all ingredients - ideally explaining why these ingredients have been used
  • provide consumers with breastfeeding advice either on pack or online
  • be safe and gentle, even on delicate skin
  • not include harsh ingredients or unnecessary additives
  • be made from bio-degradable materials, and
  • be sold in recyclable packaging by ethically aware companies.

You can read all about this trial and find out about the TIPS Award-winning breast pads and breast treatments here...

tipsducktipsduckFeatured book :: Hair in Funny Placestipsducktipsduck

Hair in Funny Placesy by Babette Cole

RRP: £5.99

First published in 1999

ISBN: 0099266261

book

In the early 1990s when my eldest children were asking searching questions like: ‘where do babies come from?’ and ‘why does mummy have boobies?’ a good friend recommended I buy: Mummy Laid an Egg (see image above). I bought the book and it was an instant success. From the first read, my children (and me too) laughed all the way to the very last page, and just as we finished reading the story they would cry ‘again’! My children were around five years old at the time and we continued to read this book over the years. We also passed it on to our friends, so they too could be educated and entertained in equal measure. In 1999 Babette Cole released a follow-up: Hair in Funny Places. This book takes the reader on an imaginative journey through puberty, with the help of delightful characters, including Mr and Mrs Hormone. The text is easy to follow and strikes the perfect balance between fun and honesty. As well as being highly comical, the illustrations are easy to understand and provide a great starting point for chats about a subject that can be tricky to tackle.

This wee gem of a book sadly came out at the wrong time for me. Even though I had two children about to enter puberty, I was too busy with  two new babies, so I missed its publication!  However, when my youngest children were ready for the answers to their ‘puberty’ questions I knew where to go.

Babette Cole has a great skill: she can write about any topic, without causing any embarrassment to the reader. Her common-sense and matter-of-fact descriptions are expertly written in a language that is easy to understand at any age, although Hair in Funny Places is aimed at children aged 6 years and over. So if your child is asking questions about why girls and boys are different, it is time for you to check out this excellent little book. (Review by Sharon Trotter)

Peppa Pig Theme Park Fun on Nintendo DS

Launch date: 25 March 2011

RRP: £24.99

video game

With 18 brand new fun-filled games Peppa Pig: Theme Park Fun is excellent value for money. It has a wide variety of easy-to-play engaging activities for kids aged 3 to 7 years.

Peppa Pig: Theme Park Fun follows the family’s day out at a theme park. Its release coincides with the opening of the multi-million pound themed attraction Peppa Pig World at Paultons Park.

For more information go to: www.playwithpeppa.com

My younger sons have a Nintendo DS, but at the age 13 and 11 they were not keen to review a Peppa Pig video game. They did however play this game and reluctantly agreed it was ‘quite good’ which, in teen speak, means they liked it! So I decided to ask two young girls (TIPS Testers) age eight and five years to try the game for me, and they were delighted to oblige. They gave me their review all handwritten and complete with gorgeous graphics. It is too good to edit so I have decided to show it to you exactly as it was submitted! Read the review by Jenny (8 years) and Kirsty (5 years) here...

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did and a BIG thank you to our little trainee journalists!

tipsducktipsduckFeatured DVD :: Doula! The ultimate birth companiontipsducktipsduck

DVD

Released in June 2010

www.doulafilm.com

RRP: £14.99

Produced by Toni Harman, Alto Films Ltd

Running time: approx 1 hour

A doula is a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth. This is not a new concept but a tradition that has been in place for many years across all cultures. Doulas are especially useful for women who don’t get support from close family. Research has shown that mothers who get support from someone they trust have shorter labour, need less pain relief drugs and are less likely to have surgical deliveries. Such support also helps mother’s breastfeed and makes birth a more positive experience. As a midwife I am well aware of the importance of ongoing practical, emotional and psychological support for women throughout pregnancy, during birth and in the first few weeks after the birth. Maternity units are busy, NHS budgets are being cuts and there are not enough midwives. This means that some mothers don’t get the vital support they need. When I heard about this DVD, I wanted to find out how a doula could complement the care midwives provide and improve the birthing experience for parents-to-be.

Film-maker Toni Harman was inspired to make Doula! following his wife’s difficult birth experience. He hopes the film will encourage women to have the birth they want, with the help of a doula. I asked two of our Parent Testers to review the DVD – one reviewer is a doula, the other is considering training to become one.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film, especially as it includes the father and close family. The doula made sure every member of the home birthing team was able to provide the right support.  This meant that the father-to-be could give his partner one-on-one care and support throughout her labour. This helps parents share the emotions of the birthing experience more deeply. I am happy to recommend this DVD to parents who are considering employing a doula or to any woman who is interested in becoming a doula. (Introduction by Sharon Trotter)

This DVD highlights the invaluable support a doula provides - not just for the mother, but for the father too. The DVD features the first home visit of each doula, but I think it would have been useful to find out more about the period before birth. This could include the doula attending hospital visits with the parents or parentcraft classes. The birth scenes are very powerful and I felt it was a privilege to be able to share these moments. A postnatal visit is also featured. This lets the viewer see the parents with their new baby. It certainly encouraged me to follow my goal of becoming a doula. Doula! The ultimate birth companion made me realise how valuable a doula’s support can be for parents-to-be. (Review by Jillian  - Mother of two with an interest in becoming a doula)

Doula! The ultimate birth companion is a documentary which explains what a doula is.  Anyone who has ever wondered exactly what a doula is should watch this.

The film is split into two parts. Part one shows birth doulas in action and part two follows a postnatal doula.

Doula! The ultimate birth companion follows three couples who discuss why they wanted a doula and how the doula has helped them achieve what they wanted from their births.

Two couples featured are filmed giving birth in birthing pools so be prepared for full nudity! The third couple experience a caesarean section – this isn’t shown. All couples give their honest feedback about their experience of using a doula.

The last part of the film shows a postnatal doula and how she helps out with a new mum and her family.

This true to life film is easy to watch. My only criticism would be the use of piano instrumentals throughout – which I found slightly annoying, but this is a matter of taste. (Review by Emma - Mother of two and practising doula -

www.ayrshiredoula.co.uk)

If you ever thought about hiring a doula or would like to become one, this is the film for you.

Electrical Safety Council’s (ESC) Plug into Safety Campaign

illustration

With news of so many tragic deaths in house fires, I thought you may be interested to find out about a simple device that can prevent such horror, many of which could be prevented by having RCD protection.

A residual-current device (RCD) is a potentially life saving device. It is designed to disconnect a circuit quickly when it detects a problem with the electric current. This prevents people getting a fatal electric shock when you touching something that is live, for example a bare wire.  Ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide this level of protection. You can find out more about the Plug into Safety campaign here....

Easyhaler
Tiny inhaler makes life easier for children who have asthma Easyhaler is the world’s smallest asthma inhaler. This new device is so effective and discreet that children as young as six can use it. Statistics show that 30 per cent of children with severe asthma are bullied. These children are often self- conscious when using their inhalers. Other pupils may tease and bully them. Children who have asthma don’t use their inhalers when they should because they don’t want to be stared at in the playground or in the classroom. Children can easily keep Easyhaler in their pockets. Easyhaler’s ingenious mouthpiece ensures the right dose of medication is inhaled correctly. Because it is ready to use in a quick click, children are more likely to use it. Small enough to fit into the palm of a child’s hand, Easyhaler is the first inhaler to come with its own protective case to help keep it clean. The case can be personalised with fun stickers so it looks less medical. Easyhaler can help to boost confidence allowing children to control their asthma without disrupting their school life. Your doctor can prescribe Easyhaler. You can get information and advice about asthma from Asthma UK: visit their website or call an asthma nurse on Asthma UK Advice line on 0800 121 6244 (Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm).

MoBoleez www.moboleez.com RRP: $30 or £28 online
I came across the MoBoleez while surfing the net and thought this was a delightfully innovative way to give Mums the privacy they need to breastfeed when out and about. The MoBoleez hat is the brainchild of Canadian business woman and breastfeeding mum Diane Sam. The ‘stay on head sideways’ design means that when the hat is on, it stays on - no more fussing with dropping blankets or awkward, bulky 'nursing covers'. The big brim gives mum a little privacy, but doesn't hide breastfeeding, it celebrates it in a fun sort of way! The MoBoleez breastfeeding hat comes in a multitude of designs to suit all tastes and occasions.
