Join us as we celebrate 11 years of TIPS®!

Time has flown since last June, when we reached our 10 year milestone at TIPS® and here we are ready to celebrate our 11th birthday! We are delighted to still receive such wonderful feedback from our loyal readers. We look forward to continuing to provide you with our unique mix of independent, impartial and above all non-commercial advice on all things related to pregnancy and parenthood.
Our featured event and main newsletter prize is a brilliant idea! I am certain it will become a popular holiday option for families, and for couples too. Snoozebox is a unique and innovative portable hotel providing luxury ‘on-site’ accommodation at major events and festivals across the UK and Europe. We are also excited to be able to offer you the chance to win a 2 night stay in a Snoozebox at the Great Dorset Steam Fair this September (worth £200)! We introduce a brand new product which, I am prepared to admit, seemed rather gimmicky when I first heard of it. How wrong was I? Not only is Becky Mantin's Nappy Grab Bag a great idea for busy mums and dads on the go, but it comes with my favourite baby products: both the Weleda Nappy Change Cream and Jackson Reece Wipes achieved Best of the best awards in TIPS trials!
We have a brand new selection of TIPS Testers' pix for you to enjoy, including many from our featured blog: The Mummy Adventure. Maybe you have photos of your own you would like to share with us? We're always on the lookout for photos to feature under the following categories: baby, toddler, family, bump, scan, breastfeeder, baby-wearing, baby-led-weaning and grandparent. So please email us your photos ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )! I will send a signed copy of my book (Breastfeeding: the essential guide) to the sender of each photo we publish.
We are thrilled to announce the results of the latest TIPS trial of Green People Organic Children Bath & Shower Washes. Parent Testers whose children had extra sensitive skin remarked on the gentleness of these products. Ideal for all skin types, and indeed all ages, these washes are undoubtedly some of the best organic washes available (we have three bottles to give away). We also feature the TIPS Award winning Mama Stella butters and we have a wonderful selection of Mama Stella products for you to win worth a total of £142!

One for One™. More products are being added so check out the latest arrivals on the website www.toms.co.uk.
Our featured app, Choiceworks, has been created with the support of leading doctors and child development specialists. This app is designed to help communication between children and caregivers. Many children on the autism spectrum use visual schedules (like the ones provided on the app) to help them navigate various routines throughout the day.

Introduction by Sharon Trotter:
I have to admit I almost deleted the press release for this new product. Being a passionate advocate of a 'less is more' approach to skincare, to baby products and to packaging, I expected the Nappy Grab to be just another gimmick. How wrong was I? Not only is the Nappy Grab Bag a great idea for busy mums and dads on the go, but it comes with my favourite baby products: both the Weleda Nappy Change Cream and Jackson Reece Wipes achieved Best of the best awards in TIPS trials!
The story behind Nappy Grab Bags...
Becky Mantin, the face of ITV Weather, launches all-in-one nappy changing kit designed to make getting out and about with little ones easier, simpler, faster and greener.
Looking after a baby is an amazing experience, but it’s not without its stressful moments. Getting out to visit the park, see friends, grab a coffee or show off your baby is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of being a new parent. But gathering all the kit you need (without packing the entire contents of the nursery) isn’t easy.
Now mum of two and face of ITV Weather for 12 years, Becky Mantin has launched a simple, pocket size and eco-friendly changing pack. Becky Mantin’s Nappy Grab Bag includes everything you need for a nappy change in one handy pocket-size pack. The bio-degradable polythene outer wrapping is sealed with an adhesive sustainably sourced paper label. Inside the wrapping are an eco-responsible Naty by Naturecare nappy, a sachet of Weleda nappy cream, and four individually-foil-packed Jackson Reece organic baby wipes. The wrapping doubles as a hygienic surface for the baby to lie on while the nappy is changed. A pocket at the foot end of the wrapping can be used for the dirty nappy and dirty wipes. When the change is complete, simply roll the mat up, seal it securely with an adhesive strip ready to dispose of in a normal bin.
As both an environmental expert and the mother of an eczema sufferer, Becky has been entirely focused on creating a product that is not only as ecologically responsible as it can be – but contains items that she uses on her own children’s sensitive skin.
This should put an end to the frustration of hunting for nappies and wipes, carrying around a bulky changing bag, or forgetting an essential item!
The idea of the Nappy Grab Bag came to Becky Mantin during her second maternity leave. With her entrepreneurial zeal she has turned her idea into a product that new parents can now buy and love. Available in six sizes and costing approximately £2 per change Becky Mantin’s Nappy Grab Bag is available from Ocado. An environmental expert and the mother of an eczema sufferer, Becky has made sure her product is both as ecologically responsible as possible and contains products she uses on her own children’s sensitive skin.

  • She says: 'The overflowing nappy bag we parents lug around with us is such a nuisance. It’s heavy, bulky, time-consuming to check and restock and, of course, no real guarantee that you’re not going to forget or run out of an essential element. When my husband and I got caught short on just one of many occasions, it occurred to me how much easier it would be to simply shove a Nappy Grab Bag in your pocket and know that you’re sorted!

Even before launch, the Nappy Grab Bag scooped an award: the Ecopack Challenge Award 2015 at the Packaging Innovations Show. Becky has worked with leading product designers Factorydesignand branding consultancy Rebecca Batman Limitedto bring her idea to life.

With a dozen TIPS Awards already under their belt, the Organic Babies and Organic Children ranges are already a firm favourite with our Parent Testers. With excellent organic formulations and eco-friendly credentials, these products are ideal for any skin type and many are suitable for vegans. In fact, Organic Babies and Organic Children products are perfect for all babies, big and small!

30 TIPS Testers reviewed these bath & shower washes, using the product on little ones aged six months old to 9 years.
Parent Testers were very impressed by the excellent information provided on pack and online. This includes a detailed list of ingredient with an explanation of what they are and what they do. Testers agreed the bath & shower washes were easy to dispense and lathered well - this is despite the products being free of sulphate. The fruity varieties smelt almost good enough to eat and little ones (and not so little ones!) really enjoyed bath time with these lovely products.

TOMS: with every product you purchase, TOMS will help a person in need. One for One.™ illustration

The TOMS® Story
In 2006, American traveller Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS®, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One™.
Realizing this movement could serve other basic needs, TOMS® Eyewear was launched. With every pair purchased, TOMS® will help give sight to a person in need. One for One™.
Introduction by Sharon Trotter:
I recently bought myself a pair of TOMS shoes (see pictures above) because I liked the idea that my purchase would lead to another pair of shoes being given to someone in need. Before this purchase, I had no idea of the range of products sold by TOMS or of the many wonderful projects that benefit from TOMS sustainable and responsible business practices.
How it works
Every time a TOMS product is purchased, a person in need is helped.
The TOMS Giving Team collaborates with Giving Partners to plan how we can support their work, by giving TOMS products or by helping them to provide services.

Here is how you can help TOMS help others:

tipsducktipsduck:: book review  :: :: tipsduckThe Secret Life of Germs: what they are, why we need them, and how we can protect ourselves against themtipsduck

By Philip M. Tierno, Jr., PhD.

Published by Atria Books (January 2004) - £8.99 from Amazon.co.uk
Paperback - 301 pages

illustration

Review by Sharon Trotter: A life changing read...
I heard about Philip Tierno's book, The Secret Life of Germs completely by chance: it was mentioned in a CNN TV clip I watched while on holiday in Ibiza back in 2005. Once home, I ordered The Secret Life of Germs from Amazon. This excellent and thought-provoking book talks about why germs are both frightening and reassuring to mankind. For me personally, this book became so much more than an excellent read...
Having read The Secret Life of Germs I wrote to Philip asking for his thoughts on my water-only approach to baby care during the first month of life. I wanted to know if encouraging parents to practice uninterrupted colonisation of the newborn by skin-to-skin contact with the mother (and reducing the number of carers) would reduce the risk of cross infection when the baby’s immune system is still immature.
Philip kindly wrote back, gave me the reassurance I had hoped for and kindly allowed me to quote his comments in papers I wrote for peer-reviewed journals. This is what he wrote:
"Without reservation I concur with your recommendation of bathing neonates with just plain water (no soap) for the first month as the baby is in the process of developing its own normal stable microbiota".
I believe support from such an influential expert in his field gave added credibility to my work.
Having studied and researched neonatal skincare, I developed guidelines for my own NHS maternity unit. These have since been introduced throughout the UK. Philip's support of my hypothesis that: 'anything placed ‘on, in or around a baby’ has the potential to cause harm' gave me the confidence I needed to do this work. The advice forms the basis of our TIPS® award-winning leaflet Babycare - back to basics™
In 2006 I was lucky to have the pleasure of meeting Philip at the New York University Medical Centre, where he showed me and my family around his laboratory. I am pleased to say that we still keep in touch.
I would highly recommend The Secret Life of Germs, especially to anyone interested in how germs affect us all in our everyday life. It is easy to read and includes some lovely stories and anecdotes which truly bring the text to life.
I particularly loved this statement:
“We must continue to explore the gargantuan potential of microbes so that we may harness their power for the good of mankind”.
This book shows that germs need not be our enemy; in fact they could well become our best friends!

tipsduck:: NeW :Ne:: Ne::NeW : tipsducktipsduck Poem: Welcome to Holland tipsducktipsduck

illustration

We introduce our very first featured poem. Taken from website: Child-Autism-Parent-Cafe

Most of the poems are written by authors who identify themselves as autistic, mothers of children with autism, and others who are touched by an exceptional person. Welcome to Holland was my particular favourite but you might choose another.
Welcome to Holland
I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability – to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this…
When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip – to Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum, the Michelangelo David, the gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.
After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."
"Holland?!" you say. "What do you mean, Holland?" I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy.
But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.
The important thing is that they haven't taken you to some horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.
So you must go out and buy a new guidebook. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.
It's just a different place. It's slower paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around, and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills, Holland has tulips, Holland even has Rembrandts.
But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy, and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life you will say, "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."
The pain of that will never, ever, go away, because the loss of that dream is a very significant loss.
But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland.

Rhythm drinks in three flavours: £1.69 for 126g bottle
Rhythm 100% Coconut Milk: £2.99 for 200g pouch

illustration

logos www.facebook.com/rhythmhealth.co.uk ~ @RhythmHealthLTD

Introduction by Sharon Trotter:
I came across this product after my son had experienced a particularly nasty bout of food poisoning and was unable to tolerate any food or drink, even water. He was in Brighton at the time, which made life more difficult, so he visited a local health food shop and asked for some advice. They recommended the pure coconut Rhythm drink and almost immediately his digestive system felt calmer. He was able to continue working and, knowing I would be interested in this 'all natural' remedy, he sent me a picture of the bottle. I then contacted the company and was fascinated by their story, not to mention impressed to hear about their loyal customers who seem to agree that Rhythm products really can make a difference to those in need of digestive relief.
You can read how this company started here: https://www.rhythmhealth.co.uk/about-us/
Rhythm Health...
Rhythm is a health food company specialising in creating pure, natural and nutritious products to aid digestive nutrition. At the heart of Rhythm is a small team of experts, each with a background in food science, manufacturing or nutrition. All products are made using a cold-pressing technique (also known as cold-water pressurisation). This ensures they are raw (uncooked), natural, and provide optimum levels of nutrition. The process uses lots of cold water with a whole lot of pressure behind it but no heat whatsoever. This method preserves all the nutrients and at the same time, it allows the kefir (cultures) to ‘live’ in the coconut milk, without the need to add sugar. Kefir is a fermented milk drink made with kefir "grains" (a yeast/bacterial fermentation starter) which has its origins in the Caucasus Mountains and the recipe has been passed down through generations.
This is why Rhythm has a whopping 20% more 'good pressure' bacteria than fermented dairy drinks. Rhythm also has lots of minerals such as potassium, magnesium, sodium and vitamins – all naturally present thanks to the coconuts and real fruit used – ideal for rehydration!
Rhythm drinks are free from cholesterol, dairy, soya, gluten and suitable for vegans. They are safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women although it is still best to check first with your GP.
Why is this so important for your health?
The digestive system really is the cornerstone of our wellbeing, so it’s essential to keep it all ticking over nicely – so when we refer to your 'natural inner rhythm', that’s exactly what we’re talking about.
For centuries, there’s been evidence that real, live fermented foods – combined with a balanced diet, hydration and exercise – are particularly helpful when it comes to keeping our digestive systems ticking over. Live fermented foods include yoghurt and sauerkraut, as well as kefir.
Our stomachs react very well to these because they contain ‘live’ bacteria, such as lactic acid bacteria, which travel through your digestive system. We all have lactic acid bacteria in our gut naturally, so consuming real, live fermented foods, such as Rhythm drinks, just tops this up.
Three 126g bottles should keep you topped up for the week – providing just the right amount your natural inner rhythm needs – but if you fancy a bottle a day, then go right ahead.
With three delicious flavours to choose from – Passionately Mango (with a hint of Passion fruit), Pomegranate (a taste of the exotic) and Perfectly Pure (the wondrous taste of pure coconut) – you’re sure to find the one to make you tick.

  • You can buy Rhythm products online at www.rhythmhealth.co.uk and from Whole Foods Market, Holland & Barrett, As Nature intended & Planet Organic and other independent health food stores.

Eco-friendly packaging at Rhythm...
Rhythm take their eco-friendly credentials very seriously, from production right through to packaging. To ensure that you receive Rhythm products in perfect condition, they need to be stored and shipped at a constant temperature. To achieve this Rhythm ship out all goods in Woolcool packaging (more expensive but vital). An ethical and environmentally responsible business, Wool Packaging is very sensitive to the welfare of animals, particularly sheep from which their sustainable insulated packaging material is made. If you are allergic to wool, Rhythm products can also be shipped in highly insulated foam based packaging - this costs an extra £5 per shipment (this option is available at the checkout).
Rhythm Cleanse...coming soon...
illustration
Amanda Hamilton was so impressed with the Rhythm products that she agreed to join the team as Director of Nutrition. Quinoa is the sacred crop of the Incas. This uber tasty, nutritious super-grain powered the greatest empire South America has ever seen. It’s now been recognised as a superfood by NASA, who has earmarked quinoa as a key food source for deep space missions. Quinola Mothergrain is the brand name for quinoa.
Quinola have introduced two new ranges: one for babies and one for growing kids.
The baby range is 100% organic and Fairtrade. It's the UK's first completely vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free baby food. The packaging is recyclable and the range is free from preservatives and added sugar.
There are six varieties in the baby range: two stage 1 (Carrot; Sweet Potato), two stage 2 (Pinto Bean; Swede & Parsnip) and two stage 3 (Peas & Spinach; Butternut Squash).
The Kids Range is all quinoa-based (so super healthy) and full of vegetables but with flavours that kids will love: Tex Mex, Thai Curry and Mediterranean.
These healthy and tasty meals are ready to eat hot in just one minute - great for busy families!
