Western Isles Hospital - Maternity Unit in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides
Thank you to the staff at The Western Isles Hospital Stornoway who gave me such a warm welcome during my whistle stop tour of their unit last week. The highlight of the day was showcasing the innovative Tummy Tub which perfectly showed how useful this is for calming a crying baby! Within seconds this baby stop screaming and settled into a relaxing trance.....aaaawww!
I was in Stornoway to meet with staff and parents. This was to update them on the latest evidence-based advice about baby skincare provided in my Babycare – back to basics™ leaflet. I talked about my journey to introducing new baby skincare guidelines within my local NHS board back in 2004 and explained how these have the potential to prevent babies from developing distressing skin conditions. You can get the most recent edition of the Babycare – back to basics™ leaflet here...

General Practice Awards
Sharon attended the gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, Park Lane, London. Organised by Campden Media’s three leading primary care magazines – Nursing in Practice, Management in Practice and GP Business – along with the generous support of leading independent hospital provider BMI healthcare, the event celebrated the success of general practices in 2011. Sharon was shortlisted in two categories: Innovators of the year and Nurse of the year. Sharon also nominated her GP Dr Christine Auld (see picture of Sharon and Christine) in the GP of the year category and although they did not scoop a major prize it was a pleasure to be finalists at this glittering evening where the hard work and dedication of so many unsung heroes was recognised by their peers. The event was hosted by the very funny Dr Phil Hammond who entertained the audience with his quick witted humour based on his own experiences of the NHS. You can find out more here....
CLIC Sargent 21st Anniversary Ball - Brig o Doon House Hotel, Ayr
Over 200 guests got together for a fabulous night of entertainment to mark the 21st Birthday of Malcolm Sargent House in Prestwick Ayrshire.
Hosted by Chick Young, the evening began with a champagne reception followed by a delicious four-course meal. The entertainment consisted of a diverse selection of acts including the Pokey Hats (a raucous band of Scottish pipes and drums), the haunting voice of Nicola Cassels and the northern wit of Chris Mitchell. Bidding was brisk during an exciting auction as dozens of amazing lots went under the hammer, not forgetting the dozens of raffle prizes and a silent auction, making sure that most guests went home with armfuls of goodies. The evening concluded with the excellent Glasgow Soul band ‘Counselled Out’ who kept us on our feet until the wee hours!
Despite the economic downturn we are delighted to announce that this event went on to raise a whopping £31,000!
It is 21 years since Malcolm Sargent House opened its doors to help provide individual support to children and young people with cancer and leukaemia.
May Gilchrist, Community Fundraising Manager, was supported by members of the fundraising committee succeeded in pulling off yet another success. By the end of the evening we were all ready for a seat (see picture Of May and Sharon above) but it was worth all the hard work. A BIG thank you to all the sponsors, especially Brown Brothers printers who wowed us with a special birthday programme (see picture above).
