Weleda Baby Calendula Nappy Change Cream

RRP: £6.50 for 75mls
Price per ml: 8.66p
Supplied and manufactured by www.weleda.co.uk
Tested October – December 2009

This nappy cream is easy to use and smells gorgeous. The natural ingredients are of the highest quality. All Weleda products come with excellent information leaflets. Comprehensive advice about pregnancy, birth and baby skincare is available on Weleda’s recently updated website. This nappy cream is part of an extensive range of products manufactured by Weleda - a company with outstanding ethical and environmentally-friendly credentials.
Testers were unanimous in their praise for this product. It has a silky smooth consistency that absorbs easily into the skin. This creates a perfect barrier to protect baby’s bottom. The effectiveness of this cream to treat nappy rashes proved exceptional. One Tester suggested Weleda Baby Calendula Nappy Change Cream should be in every change bag.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Love the feel, it forms a very good barrier but is also absorbed easily
  • It works wonders on rashes of all sorts
  • A little more expensive but it is cost-effective

Organic Monkey Bumfluff nappy balm

RRP: £10.50 for 50mls
Price per ml: 21p
Supplied and manufactured by www.organicmonkey.co.uk
Tested September - October 2011 (RT)

Organic Monkey is the UK's first Fairtrade and Soil Association certified baby skincare range. This company is the brainchild of two mums who wanted to provide truly organic products suitable for even the most sensitive skin types. Parent Testers were impressed with the company’s excellent eco-credentials which include: carefully sourcing Fairtrade ingredients, using recyclable packaging, choosing water-based inks, and using compostable labels. The company also supports two key charities: Sparks (who fund research into serious conditions affecting the health of babies, children and mums-to-be) and Monkey World (who assist governments around the world to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild).Testers were particularly impressed by the balm's ‘fantastic fresh scent’. They also loved the fact that the balm left no oily residue - this made it ideal for use with washable nappies. The balm was easy to dispense, absorbed well, was non-greasy and more importantly it was effective at protecting baby skin against redness and nappy rash. Testers praised the cost-effectiveness of this nappy balm commenting that a little goes a long way. Due to the overall high score we are delighted to award Bumfluff nappy balm not one but two awards: Must have and Best newcomer.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • It was a pleasure to use and I will continue to use it at every nappy change.
  • Any sign of the rash had gone by the morning, after application in the evening.
  • I would buy other products in the range based on this product.

Award: Must-have and Best newcomer

Weleda Baby Derma White Mallow Nappy Change Cream

RRP: £8.95 for 50mls
Price per ml: 18p/ml
Supplied and manufactured by www.weleda.co.uk
Tested June - July 2014 (RT)

Weleda's ethical and environmentally-friendly credentials are second to none. The information provided with Weleda baby products is excellent. Weleda advise using water only when bathing baby during the first month of life - this is in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines. Products in the Weleda Baby Calendula range have already won numerous TIPS Awards, including Top brand. So when I became aware of plans to launch the brand new Weleda Baby Derma White Mallow range of fragrance-free products, I was keen to ask Parent Testers to review these.

The Baby Derma White Mallow Nappy Change Cream is 100% certified natural by the international association NATRUE. It has also been awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™. It is formulated with organic ingredients (including white mallow, coconut oil and sesame oil) to help support the skin’s natural functions, while zinc oxide protects against dampness and helps prevent soreness in the nappy area. There are no added perfumes so this gentle cream is suitable for even the most sensitive skin types. Although this nappy cream is fragrance free, the delicate scent of the white mallow and coconut lingers on the skin - this is a pleasant change from other unscented ranges. Parent Testers agreed this delicate (but rich in texture) nappy cream was not only effective, calming and protective, but it left their baby’s skin feeling soft and smooth.

We also tested the Weleda Baby Derma White Mallow Body Lotion and Baby Derma White Mallow Face Cream - you can read the reviews here. The nappy cream is the latest product in this brand new Weleda range which is by far the most exciting range of baby skincare products to launch in recent years. With Weleda Baby Derma Parents can now use natural but effective products that are both ideal for babies and perfect for anyone with the most sensitive skin. We are delighted to award Weleda Baby Derma White Mallow Nappy Change Cream not one but two TIPS Awards: Best unscented and Editor’s choice.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • The consistency made it lovely and easy to apply
  • Yes it's more expensive but very impressive
  • My baby had terrible nappy rash which no over the counter remedies helped. I started using this cream and straight away I saw an improvement - not cured but much better. It also helped a horrible teething dribble rash on her chin. She has eczema patches on her stomach and I'm sure it eased those too
  • Fantastic on my son who has eczema and sensitive skin

Award: Best unscented and Editor's choice

Nom Nom Organic Baby Butter Calendula and Evening Primrose Oil

RRP: £11.95 for 60mls
Price per gm: 20p/ml
Supplied and manufactured by www.nomnomskincare.com
Tested March - April 2014

Jayne Russell, a massage and nutritional therapist with twenty years' experience and a passion for working with pregnancy, mums and babies launched Nom Nom in December 2013. Having made skin care products for herself and for her clients, Jayne Russell used her research, training and the feedback from hundreds of mums and mums-to-be to develop this new range. Jayne knew mums wanted kind but effective skincare products for themselves and for their babies. She went on to develop gentle and effective formulations that are a pleasure to use, while avoiding ingredients to which pregnant women and babies may be sensitive. She was also aware that while natural and organic credentials are important for consumers, they can also be quite confusing. This is why she sought and obtained organic certification and backed this up with clear information on-pack and online. The Nom Nom range includes three baby products and three pregnancy products, both available as a gift set. Each product is certified organic by the Soil Association, and five products also have additional COSMOS* certification.
Jayne’s hard work has obviously paid off because our Parent Testers absolutely loved the two products we tested: Nom Nom Organic Baby Butter Calendula and Evening Primrose Oil and Nom Nom Organic Baby Oil with Starflower (see baby oil category). They especially enjoyed how easy it was to apply the Nom Nom Organic Baby Butter Calendula and Evening Primrose Oil. Although it was solid at first, this baby butter melted on contact. It left skin soft, helped to reduce dry skin patches and could even be used on the face. In fact this little pot of butter had many uses for a wide variety of age groups so for this reason we are delighted to award it not one but two TIPS Awards: Must-have and Editor's choice.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • The information on pack was very clear. I initially thought it was specifically for nappy cream, but I actually used it for loads of things after reading the packaging and loved it.
  • I found this very effective and used it mainly as a nappy cream on my little girl who has sensitive skin, this was perfect for her. I also love the fact it's perfect for everywhere and great for my older children too.
  • I love the fact its ideal for everywhere, and can be used on all 3 of my children. Perfect for slipping in my bag too.
  • I wouldn't have bought it before trying it as a TIPS Tester because there are cheaper products, but I would buy it now.

AlternateStyle Bootiful Bum Balm

RRP: £10 for 100gms
Price per gm: 10p
Supplied and manufactured by www.alternatestyle.co.uk
Tested October – December 2009

AlternateStyle is a London based company. It was founded in 2007 by the daughter of a chemical engineer who also ran his own soap manufacturing business in the 1980s. I include these facts because when researching this company I was impressed by their attention to detail and the excellent background knowledge. The Bootiful Bum Balm, like all products in this range, is hand-made in the UK using the best quality natural ingredients. Testers absolutely loved the smell with one scoring it 110! The texture of the product is slightly grainy at first but it melts beautifully into the skin, and a little goes a long way. It is also very effective at calming sore bottoms. AlternateStyle source fair-trade raw materials, use certified organic essential oils and recyclable containers.  In recognition of this eco-friendly approach, we are happy to give this product an eco-friendly TIPS award.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • I liked the wide and shallow pot which allows you to get the right amount of product
  • I have slight eczema so I also used it on me!
  • It works better than anything else I have ever tried, it has the best texture and a lovely clean scent

 Award:  Best eco-friendly

RRP: £16.99 for 120mls
Price per ml: 14.1p

The name "Shea Mooti" came about because Violet used ethically-sourced Shea Butter from AfriKids’ Daughters, a multi-cooperative in northern Ghana, to create her initial range of products. ‘Mooti’ comes from ‘Muti’ meaning ‘tree’ in Shona – the language of Violet's native Zimbabwe. The Shea Mooti range includes a gorgeous hand-made soap (we tested this as a baby wash, and you can read the reviews in the TIPS Awards section of this website), the Mama’s Belly Rub Stretch Mark Oil (we tested this as a belly balm, and you can read the reviews in the TIPS Awards section of this website) and Mama’s soothing Leg and Foot cream.Testers agreed that Mama’s Everything Body Balm not only lived up to expectations but exceeded them. This silky balm smelled beautiful and left skin feeling soft and nourished. Our Testers found tt calmed itchy hands, moisturised stretch marks, pampered lips and soothed nappy rash. • A pleasure to test and I will definitely continue to use it, and buy more, when my tub runs out!

B Organic Skincare Soothing Body Balm

RRP:£13 for 60mls
Price per ml: 21.6p
Also available in unscented
Supplied and manufactured by www.b-organic.co.uk
Tested March - April 2011

B Organic Skincare is the brainchild of Aycin who started off by creating products to help calm her daughter’s severe eczema. The range has evolved to include products for babies (not newborns), toddlers, mums-to-be and all women, but there is no reason why men should not also enjoy them.
B Organic Skincare Soothing Body Balm is made in the UK using 100 per cent certified organic ingredients. Testers absolutely loved the scent describing it as ‘divine’ and ‘yummy’. The texture of the product is slightly grainy at first but it melts beautifully into the skin, and a little goes a long way. We tested B Organic Skincare Soothing Body Balm as a nappy cream but this multi-purpose product can also be used for sensitive skin and dermatitis. It is also very effective at calming sore bottoms.B Organic Skincare sources certified organic ingredients with great care. Most of these are plant-based raw materials. This company have first class green credentials and use recyclable packaging for their whole range. As this balm was tested independently of the main nappy creams trial we cannot give it a ‘Best’ award. However, in recognition of its overall high score and positive feedback from Testers, we are delighted to award B Organic Skincare Soothing Body Balm an ‘Editor’s choice’ TIPS award. This is what some of the Testers said:

  • It was very effective at clearing up a few dry patches on my baby’s skin within only one or two applications.
  • Sometimes more expensive products do not live up to the hype but this one was fabulous.
  • Initially I did not like the texture but when ‘warmed’ and rubbed in I loved it!

Tested October – December 2009

Made with 100% certified organic ingredients including fair trade shea butter, this nappy cream is handmade in small batches in Suffolk. Testers liked the graphics that will soon be launched. They particularly liked the size and shape of the container which made dispensing easy. Essential Care’s founder Margaret Weeds has been creating skincare products for 30 years (originally as a remedy for the family’s eczema). Margaret is still responsible for Essential Care’s unique product formulations and she takes great care to use only the highest quality, organic, pure, and ethically-sourced raw ingredients. Testers loved the fragrance of this nappy cream describing it as fresh, natural and a nice surprise. Aromababy Barrier Balm

RRP: £17 for 100gms

Price per gm: 17p
Supplied and manufactured by www.aromababy.com
Tested October – December 2009

Testers just loved this product. Aromababy Barrier Balm contains a base of pure cold pressed sweet almond oil and natural beeswax combined with a blend of calendula, evening primrose and gmo free natural vitamin E oils plus pure essential oil of German chamomile. It appeared to cure redness or sore bottoms with a few applications. The balm scored less because it is imported from Australia - this increases its carbon footprint for UK customers. Testers enjoyed the way it melted in their fingers making it easy to apply. All agreed that the product really does last a long time.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Very effective, it calmed and soothed nappy rash overnight
  • Brilliantly effective as a salve or a healing balm on sore or rough skin
  • A luxury product which lasts for ages

Award:  Highly commended

Earth’s Best Organic by JASON Diaper Relief Ointment

RRP: £6.99 for 113gms

Price per gm: 6.18p

Supplied and manufactured by www.kinetic4health.co.uk

Tested October – December 2009

Kinetic Natural Products Distributors was founded in the early 1990s by brothers Alexander and Kim. Earth’s Best Organic by JASON range is one of the many natural brands available on their website. Testers were impressed with the handy flip-top lid which keeps the  cream free from germs. However the cream has to be dispensed carefully to avoid making a mess. The product scored less because the packaging is not recyclable and because it is imported from the USA – this increases its carbon footprint for UK customers. Testers felt this was a handy product for their change bag with a very reasonable price tag for a natural product.

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • The best nappy cream I have used for ease of application – lovely consistency

  • The ointment would also be suitable for sunburn and scalds

  • A natural herbal fragrance which I really liked for a baby product

Award: Highly commended

Earth Friendly Baby Organic Red Clover Nappy Care Cream

RRP: £5.49 for 113gms
Price per gm: 4.85p
Supplied and manufactured by www.earthfriendlybaby.co.uk
Tested October – December 2009

Harnessing the anti-inflammatory properties of red clover, this natural nappy cream acted as an excellent barrier. It helped to treat red bottoms with just a few applications. This product is quite thick and Testers suggested it would be easier to dispense from a tub rather than the tube it currently comes in. This cream scored less because it is imported from the USA – this increases its carbon footprint for UK customers. Testers thought the product was reasonably priced and liked the fact that it was available in two sizes (one for home and one for travelling – this is especially useful for the busy parent).

This is what some of the Testers said:

  • Brilliant cream worked wonders and left her skin soft
  • The results were amazing and it lasted ages
  • The nursery also liked it after using it on my daughter

Award: Highly commended
