I am delighted to be showcasing the Weleda (UK) website. In the TIPS 2007 baby skincare product trials, Weleda received eight TIPS awards, including TIPS Top Brand and I wanted to introduce you to some of the other wonderful products that form part of this highly respected brand. I am also delighted to announce that I will be working more closely with Weleda, helping to provide the very best advice on baby skincare issues in my capacity as Independent Baby Skincare Advisor. You can download the TIPS babycare-back to basics™ leaflet and TIPS® Toolkit for Breastfeeding support from the Baby & You section of the recently redesigned Weleda website.

Founded in Switzerland in 1921, Weleda was the original ‘green’ brand, consciously choosing to use only natural ingredients and growing plants organically. Today Weleda remains committed to these principles, and Weleda has grown to be the largest manufacturer of natural, ethical bodycare globally.

Behind Weleda’s range there lies an important ethos concerning the way in which we take care of our wellbeing, and how we should relate to the world around us. The fundamental principle is to produce products based on the philosophy that humans should live in harmony with nature – so respecting the environment we live in, the world around us, our fellow workers, and trading in an ethical and sustainable way. This is one of the central values of Weleda and has shaped the company over the decades. Today Weleda has companies in 26 countries across 5 continents, employs over 1,800 people and has 135 acres of organic herb gardens around the world growing over 300 species of plant.

Developed over generations with the help of doctors, dermatologists, midwives and other health professionals, Weleda’s award-winning range includes a wealth of lotions and potions, from everyday essentials such as toothpastes to luxurious home spa products. There is also a useful selection of homeopathic remedies and natural medicines for everyday ills and spills including baby colic and teething.

Started with baby oil in 1950, Weleda’s Calendula Baby range includes products to protect, cleanse, nourish and soothe delicate baby skin. The range is made with 100% natural ingredients, based on organic calendula and chamomile. Free from synthetic additives of any kind, the range is derived from sun-ripened seeds and fruits such as sesame and sweet almond. It has been dermatologically-tested on easily irritated skin prone to eczema and dermatitis, so is ideal for anyone that needs to take special care of their skin. The Weleda Baby range is available from Boots and Waitrose stores, and many other independent health shops. Weleda products can also be bought directly from their new on-line store at where the new Store Locator search facility can also help you find a local stockist near you.

tipsducktipsduckFeatured book :: Precycle!tipsducktipsduck

By Paul Peacock RRP: £7.95
Published by Good Life Press
(January 15, 2009)
ISBN: 1904871380

Paul Peacock’s book is about making the everyday things you need, yourself, and by doing that there should be almost no need for recycling.
Making your own sauces, jams, household cleaning products, bacon, beer and wine should almost make recycling redundant as there would be no need for all the packaging we return from the supermarket with on a weekly basis.

There are recipes in this book for making just about anything you might need day to day in your home, you can even make your own shampoo and moisturiser.

You will, however, have to buy most of the ingredients or, at least, the ones you don’t grow yourself but you can leave out all the fillers, chemicals, preservatives etc present in many shop bought products.

The point is made by the author that we’ve lost a lot of our knowledge about how to make things for ourselves, we’ve become conditioned to using only what’s on offer, ready made, on the supermarket shelf and seemingly we have more time on our hands to do less. There is a reference to what our grandparents did, and how they lived, working long hard hours...but I’m not so sure that things are all that different today for many of us.

While I absolutely agree that there is a real value and sense of achievement in making your own jams, bread, cakes and so on, I also know that my grandmother did not go out to work as most of today’s women do. Yes, the washing took practically a whole day to do but she wasn’t dropping the kids off at nursery or school before putting in an eight hour day at work, before rushing home to make the dinner.

The author does admit that there are not enough hours in the day to do all that he suggests, and also earn a living. But there is no doubt that if we followed even a few of his recipes, and made some stuff for ourselves, then we would be making a small contribution to saving the planet and maybe enhance our quality of life.

We'd like to hear from you!!

At TIPS, we are constantly researching baby skincare. To do this, we need to find out about your own experience - what worked well for you and your baby, and maybe what didn't, and about any advice you received along the way.

You can tell us what you think by completing our online survey here. And as we want to hear from as many parents as possible, please ask another Mum - or other Mums – who have young children or have had a baby in the past 12 months to complete the survey too.

Your feedback will help us understand your baby skincare needs. We will publish the results of the survey on later on this year.

TIPS baby

Keeping the bathing theme going we have chosen this delightful picture of baby Juliana enjoying a relaxing bath in her Tummy Tub. Her Mummy won this in the December 2008 TIPS newsletter competition (filled with 17 other TIPS award winning products) so it is wonderful to see it filled with a gorgeous little baby.
TIPS toddler

Over the past few months we have received a few pictures of little Noori with each new photo even cheekier than the other – it was really hard to choose a favourite! Thank you to Mummy Natalija for sharing these lovely shots and a copy of Breastfeeding: the essential guide is on its way to you with a special dedication to Noor.
TIPS family

You may not recognise this baby but she was actually our TIPS baby in newsletter 13 (April 2009).Ashleigh was born at 29 weeks weighing a tiny 1.1kgs but as you can see she is growing bigger and stronger by the day. Here she is with Mummy and Daddy and we think you will agree she has become a perfect pin-up girl!
TIPS bump

Here is Natalie (our very first TIPS Tester) showing off her perfectly formed bump back in October 2006. Baby Izzy arrived two days later and has just been joined by a new baby brother called Sefton, making this little family complete. Here’s hoping the new arrival sleeps slightly better than number one?! Could be four in a bed!

TIPS breastfeeder

Thank you to Mum Jacqui who explained that she had been talking on her mobile phone while feeding and could not resist taking this picture showing you can multitask while breastfeeding! I just love this picture which shows the pure enjoyment experienced by baby Fin, aged four months as he feeds at the breast in a dreamy state! A copy of Breastfeeding: the essential guide is on its way to you.
If you would like your baby or todder to feature in the next issue of the TIPS e-newsletter, just email me their picture.
