Brexit Brexit Brexit...are you fed up with the uncertainty too?

I try to avoid being political and whatever side of the Brexit debate you are on, I respect your opinions. But the inevitable and prolonged uncertainty is becoming more and more frustrating...

No matter what news programme you watch or what newspaper or magazine you read it is almost impossible to avoid discussions and debates about the potential ramifications of a Brexit, deal or no-deal. Let's hope the powers that be will find the grace to stop arguing and pass this momentous decision back to the people. Only then can we make absolutely sure the UK can concentrate on the important issues that have, for too long, been sidelined.

Whatever happens with Brexit, we will deal with it and I sincerely hope our relations with Europe can continue to be close because we all need to work together for the sake of our children and our grandchildren. OK end of political rant!

Back to more exciting matters: we have a fun packed e-newsletter with lots of lovely giveaways for you all to win...

I continue to enjoy using my DUOLINGO App (featured last time) and I'm on a 150+ day streak! The last time I visited my daughter in the Netherlands, I definitely found it easier to understand signs and menus although I cannot say I am anywhere near fluent. At least I can say: Ik spreekt een beetje nederlands en ik wil oefenen which means: I speak a little Dutch and I want to practice!

Our latest featured App: Musical Hands is an award-winning musical app for babies and toddlers. It’s really simple to use and great fun for little ones, like my grandson Odin (featured in our Testers pix).

Our featured Video clip is a Carpool Karaoke that also promotes the wonderful work of our featured Charity: Stand Up To Cancer. This inspiring campaign is Cancer Research UK’s and Channel 4’s annual fundraising event bringing the UK together and helping speed up progress in life-saving cancer research. James Corden and Michael Bublé carpool through Los Angeles singing Michael's new music and his classic songs. They also have an emotional conversation about the devastation of a cancer diagnosis, and how we can help find a cure by donating to this charity.

Our featured film is Tigers: the long awaited release (November 2018) of a film by Oscar-winning director Danis Tanovic, based on the true story of a former Nestlé baby milk salesman in Pakistan called Syed Aamir Raza (played in the film by Emraan Hashmi). He takes on the industry with the help of IBFAN (the International Baby Food Action Network) when he realises that babies are dying as a result of his work pressuring doctors to promote formula. I heard about this film back in 2014 when it started its limited release around film festivals but I am glad to see this film will soon be more widely available around the world. This story needs to be told and, as a long term supporter of the non-profit organisation Baby Milk Action, I am pleased to see they are continuing to promote this film in any way they can.

Our first featured book: What's Right For Me -Making Decisions In Pregnancy and Childbirth is by our friend and midwifery guru Dr Sara Wickham. As soon as I heard about this book I knew that our loyal Parent Tester (and author of our very popular series 'Diary of a student midwife') would love to review this and I was right!

Our second featured book: Cookies is from the publisher Phaidon. Cookies is an Interactive Recipe Book and is fourth in a series of engaging, interactive cookbooks that invite readers to cook using tabs, flaps, wheels and more included in the book! You can also win one of three copies in our mini-competition.

Our featured products include a Silent Night and Fruity Favourites gift sets by Green People (win one of each), Weleda Gardeners Favourites gift set (see also our Top treat featuring Emma Britton who designed the Weleda 2018 Gifted by Nature Collection gift range) and a three months supply of Jackson Reece Baby Wipes, the most eco-friendly baby wipes available.

We have a new Brand to promote called Little Freddie (Brigitte loves this one as her grandson shares the same name!). Little Freddie was born when founders husband and wife team Piers and Taslim started their family. That’s when they discovered the baby food on offer at the time fell short of what they what wished for so they developed their own. You can win a month's supply of Little Freddie foods (worth £20) in our mini competition.

Check out our latest Top Tips: an ingenious product to prevent slipping in the snow and ice: Nordic Mini Grip by Icebreakers; PV Films (photography with a difference plus a discount code worth up to £250); and YouTuber Louise Pentland who gives great common sense advice to new parents.

Our Top Treat is by: Emma Britton - specialist designer of decorative glass splashbacks and the 2018 Gifted From Nature Collection for Weleda. You can win one of two designer tea towels (worth £20) and get 20% discount off Emma Britton tea towels, trays and glassware (valid until 16 December 2018).

Our Top Value product is the delightful Carddies colouring in sets that we have featured before but we love their simplicity. My granddaughter Mia has tried out the new Ballet set at home and on the go and she loves it! You can enter our mini-competition to win one of two Carddies sets (worth £18).

As well as our regular mix of features, our latest My Story follows a mum who was diagnosed with polycystic ovary disease and how this impacted on her fertility.

We have a brand new selection of TIPS Testers' Pix for you to enjoy, with some adorable photos, including a pictures of my grandchildren and a competition winner from our last newsletter. Maybe you have photos of your own you would like to share with us? We're always on the lookout for photos of babies, toddlers, families, bumps, scans, breastfeeders, baby-wearing, baby-led-weaning and grandparents. So please email us your photos! I will send a signed copy of my book (Breastfeeding: the essential guide) to the sender of each photo we publish.

Last but not least we have some wonderful competitions for you to enter. Altogether our prizes are worth over £500 so email your entries to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   and you too could be a TIPS winner!

Remember if you are not 'in' you can't win!

tipsducktipsducktipsduckfeatured book 1 What's Right for Me? tipsducktipsducktipsduck

eNews44-book1

Dr Sara Wickham.

Published by Birthmoon Creations (2nd edition) in April 2018

127 Pages Paperback: £10 Kindle £5.75

Review by Kelly Riley, November 2018.

I was thrilled and excited to be asked to read and review the newest book by the wonderful Dr Sara Wickham. As a midwife of 6 years and a mother for 11 years, I have long since found Sara’s writing style invaluable and accessible to professionals, women and families alike.

This book was no exception! “What’s right for me?” is for anyone wishing to navigate the complexities of decision making during the childbearing continuum. This book is a very welcome resource because decision making in these months and years can seem overwhelming - both in the number of options to consider and the magnitude (real or perceived) of those decisions.  The effects of the events around birth can be far reaching, and as such it is important that your choices reflect your true wishes, values and beliefs.

Equally, though, this book is valuable for health professionals wishing to explore what factors influence decision making. Hopefully this will provoke thought and consideration of professionals’ own values and biases and indeed, the ways in which they provide information to those in their care.

The narrative of the book is always geared towards women centred, informed decision making. Early on, there is a section with a number of questions for self-exploration around this, which I feel is a really practical approach for those who may not know where to start. This includes thinking about and evaluating where our knowledge comes from – perhaps from research, school biology, television, friends and family. This in particular, feels like an important point to make in an era when the ‘extended family’ is becoming less prevalent – for example adults may not have been around  pregnancy, birth, or babies until they embark on their own journey, and so may feel inexperienced in this area. Importantly, Sara encourages women to explore their knowledge and intuition of their own body. This is an aspect of decision making that is often undervalued in health care, but is equally as important as other sources of knowledge.

Sara’s discussion of the way risk is presented is vitally important – clarifying ‘the numbers’ plus absolute and relative risk, can really aid understanding of what ‘risk’ is, and offer valuable perspective to what otherwise may feel like very fraught decisions. Similarly, considering the beliefs, opinions and possible biases of those presenting the information is important – Sara discusses differing values, approaches and perspectives and how this can influence the dynamic when the values of caregivers are not aligned with the women and families in their care. Sara affirms that It is possible and reasonable to change care provider if necessary in order to achieve a more compatible match. This is important to note because often women are not aware of it.

Another useful practical tool discussed is the ‘BRAINS’ acronym – which stands for:

Benefits

Risks

Alternatives

Intuition (your own!)

Nothing (what happens if we do!)

S (smile, ‘scuse yourself etc)

This can be useful in most circumstances. For me, the most valuable aspect of this, is knowing  that when decisions seem impossible or overwhelming, the ‘S’ – “Smile ‘scuse yourself, or ask for a second opinion” is a truly viable option.  Routine decisions rarely need to be made on the spot, and it’s OK to take a step back and have some time to consider.

Hopefully the days of authoritarianism in maternity care are fading - women should be at the centre of their care and, ultimately, in the driving seat when it comes to decision making. While the range of choices available can seem overwhelming, that can also be a very liberating thing if you can be empowered to feel confident to navigate the options. Whether you are a woman embarking on her first or subsequent pregnancy, this book is equally valuable and will assist in equipping you with the tools you need to discuss, consider and feel confident in the decisions you make about you and your baby’s care, before and surrounding birth.

tipsducktipsduckFeatured products 1 : RockBack Chair - www.rockback.co.uk and a special TIPS discount code for £50 off Standard and Bespoke chairs...   tipsduck

eNews44-rockback

You may remember me telling you about my serious back injury (newsletter 43). Well shortly after this, while I was recovering, my friend posted details of the RockBack chair on Facebook.  I decided to research this and ended up buying a RockBack so that I could try it out and review it for our readers.

RockBack is the brainchild of husband and wife team Simon and Emma Sydenham. They are both passionate about good posture and how to look after your back. Simon has been through two back surgeries himself and Emma's father also suffered over the years. Emma's father had found a great chair, designed by Dr Jack Nixon, which he was still using, but sadly this is no longer manufactured.

Simon decided to meet up with the original designer and explore the possibility of making this useful chair again. This is how RockBack was born again. Simon and Emma now work with four separate companies all based in England who manufacture the chair frame, seat and back, upholstery and finishing. The RockBack chair is assembled by Simon and shipped far and wide to extremely satisfied customers including me! The frame is available in a clear lacquer (5% sheen), 8 stains (Antique Pine, Dark Mahogany, Dark Oak, Golden Oak, Light Oak, Teak, Walnut or Yew) or any of the colours from the Farrow and Ball range. RockBack offer a range of fabrics and colours (all fully compliant with The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire)(Safety) Regulations 1988) including:

  • Atlantis – a Chenille with EasyClean technology in 50 colours (see the colour range here)
  • Blazer – a Wool in 60 colours (see the colour range here)
  • Modelli – a complete range of different fabrics (see the collections here)

There are now 2 new categories of chair - Special Offer (currently at £345) and Nearly New (£295).

Review by Sharon Trotter:

First impressions were very positive with my carefully packaged RockBack chair arriving on time and in perfect condition.  I started using it immediately (nothing to build just took it out of the box!).

In the first few days I have to admit that sitting in a completely new position on the RockBack chair felt a little bit strange. It made me feel like I was falling forward. However I wanted to give myself time to adjust. I had read many reviews online, one of which mentioned how strange someone had found the new seating position. I continued using the chair for short periods (I was still recovering from my herniated disc) and soon became more confident. I watched the RockBack YouTube video and read all the literature that came with the chair. It was beautifully designed and very simple to follow but maybe too concise, so I emailed Simon asking for more advice on how to get the best from the RockBack chair. Here’s what I asked:

I. Is an optimal position to place the RockBack chair in relation to your desk? If I place it where I would an ordinary chair it feels like I am stuck under the desk so I have moved it so the front of the legs sits in line with the table legs.

2.  It feels as though I am about to fall over all the time, is this normal and how long does it take to adjust to this new way of balancing?

3.  My toes are bent when sitting in the forward position, is this correct? Can I sit forward with my feet flat on the floor or do they have to be behind me? This is not comfortable for long periods so should I switch between forward and back regularly to stay more comfortable?

Simon emailed me back straightaway. He said: 'You have raised a number of good points. Having used the chair for a while, I take a lot of things for granted and clearly I need to do a better job of explaining them'. Not only did my questions prove useful but Simon agreed that a more detailed factsheet on how to get the best from the RockBack chair would be useful. We spoke on the phone and I was even asked to edit the factsheet Simon prepared. This is now available here: https://rockback.co.uk/how-to-use-your-rockback-chair/#comment-590

I am thrilled to have been able to prompt this new resource. I have found it extremely useful and hopefully many other RockBack customers will benefit from it too.

At the time of writing this review I have been using my RockBack chair every day for the past four months and I would not swap back to my old office chair. I would absolutely recommend the RockBack chair to anyone who has suffered from back pain or indeed to everyone.  Using the RockBack chair makes you think about how you are sitting and helps you be kinder to your back, so I am happy to give it a BIG thumbs up ;O)

Emma Britton, is an Independent Decorative Glass Designer. It is also an original brand, launched in 2010 with a grant from East Midland Enterprise. After completing a degree in Printed Textiles from Loughborough University and working in the glass industry, Emma’s business idea was born: this was to apply pattern to glass for splashbacks just like wallpaper and fabric, and create something different and previously unseen.

Emma now has four collections and a growing range of co-ordinating homeware and glassware (also available to hire for weddings or special occasions). Emma’s Bespoke design service is extremely popular, and her splashbacks now grace kitchens across the UK. So much more than a splashback, Emma’s designs have become a functional work of art. Emma’s customer service and attention to detail have been recognised by the ‘Best of Houzz’ award for the past three consecutive years.

All Emma Britton splashbacks are hand-finished to industry standards. Emma is able to develop new approaches and techniques to glass design in her own laminated glass studio where she can work with UK glass industry experts to fulfil a wide range of projects from supply-only to supply and install.

Her signature florals have earned her recognition in the press and the opportunity to design for some high profile clients.

Louise Pentland’s postnatal tips - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFJkIipmpCc

published on 28 February 2018

eNews44-tip3

I can’t remember how I came across this video clip. Although I don’t agree with everything Louise suggests, she does make some great points and is very easy to watch. Her girl-next-door approach is refreshing and I am not surprised that she has so many followers (2.5 million on YouTube alone) or that this video clip has over 225000 views!

This is what Louise says about herself on YouTube:

Hi, I'm Louise! I started this channel in 2009 after readers of my blog (also called Sprinkle of Glitter) suggested I give YouTube a try. I was instantly hooked and have found my internet playground on here. I make videos about beauty & fashion, positive living, motherhood, lifestyle and occasionally have special guests (friends, kittens or my sweet Daughters Darcy, 6 and Pearl, newborn). Hit the subscribe button to never miss a video again! I try to upload every Wednesday at 5pm and Sunday at 9am!

Here’s how to find some of the products Louise talks about in her tips:

Tucks witch hazel pads for piles or vaginal grazes

Mia enjoying the Ballet Carddies but deciding to paint them too!

Here is Mia out and about with her Carddies set in a coffee shop!

We have featured UK brand Carddies in a few of our TIPS e-newsletters but we cannot get enough of these quirky colouring-in games! They will make ideal stocking fillers this Christmas.

Latest additions to the range include Carddies Pirates and Carddies Christmas (see our mini-competition). The more baby focused sets are the family sets: they all have babies in them, including the Cavemen set.

You can get special discounts on multiple sets at the Carddies Amazon store, by using the promo code LOVECARD in the 'Gift Card and Promotional Codes' box at Carddies Amazon checkout.)

Review by Mia age 4 years:

Our TIPS Tester (also my adorable granddaughter) was delighted to receive a wee surprise in the post: a Carddies set featuring ballet dancers, which she loves. As well as using the coloured pencils included in this set, Mia decided she would also like to paint them, so they would be ready even quicker for role play activities!

Here is a little video showing how much fun Carddies are: http://tinyurl.com/mv9fjqx

Try out Musical hands. It costs 99p to download from the App Store HERE or Google Play HERE.
© 2011-2017 Streaming Colour Studios

eNews44-app

Baby's Musical Hands is an award-winning musical app for babies and toddlers. It’s really simple to use and great fun for little ones, like my grandson Odin (featured in our Testers pix).
A game designer and developer, but more importantly as a new father, Owen Goss realized how much his son loved games too. Owen decided to put use his expertise to build an app for his son, and that’s how Baby’s Musical Hands was born!

Baby's Musical Hands features 15 brightly coloured squares for your baby to press. Red squares make drum sounds, yellow squares play piano sounds, and blue squares play guitar sounds. Every time your baby touches the screen, colourful stars burst from their fingers. Watch them delight in the audio and visual feedback!
Baby's Musical Hands supports full multi-touch, meaning your baby gets the kind of feedback they expect when touching the screen.

TIPS family

Many congratulations to Kike and Laura on the safe arrival of baby Diego!

TIPS Dad

Kike is giving mummy a few minutes break from breastfeeding with the help of his finger for comfort!

TIPS breastfeeder 1

Diego is starting to get the hang of breastfeeding within a few days of birth but it takes time so don't expect it to be easy. I love the picture of Diego cuddling next to mum where you can see her shirt is already wet with milk due to his closeness!
eNews44-Diego1

Lying down to feed in the early days is often vital if you are experiencing any soreness after the birth. Its also a great idea to give your baby expressed breast milk via a syringe and using your little finger to encourage sucking. This can be done to give your nipples a rest in the early days.

eNews44-Diego2

Diego is a few weeks old now and much more confidentat the breast - you can see how alert he is at the beginning of a feed and then drunk with milk at the end..!

eNews44-Diego3

TIPS breastfeeder 2

Thanks you to Kelly for sharing this wonderful breastfeeding shot of her feeding baby Matilda, age 10 months. This photo was taken by her daughter Ruby age 10 years!

TIPS babywearing twins

The picture below can be seen on the facebook page called: Lace and Twins. This is a persona blog following life with twin girls in South Carolina. I liked the idea of twin baby wearing so here is what mum thinks of the Weego carrier:

Weego is a German company that has single handedly changed the game of carrying twins.

When I was pregnant, this was something I had heard of but was not on my list of ‘must haves.’ I.WAS.WRONG...
