Newsletter 45... Summer 2019...15 years of TIPS

Na 15 jaar is het voorbij. Bedankt en tot ziens...

You might remember me telling you about the language app Duolingo in newsletter 43, which I have been using for almost a year now. My Dutch is improving so I thought I would use it to sign off from our last newsletter. In case you don't understand Dutch, here’s the translation:

After 15 years it’s thank you and goodbye...

I can hardly believe that TIPS is now 15 years old! So many of our loyal Parent Testers (there have been over 1000 of you over the years) have been with us since the start. TIPS babies have become teenagers and some of you have welcomed many new babies over the years. It has been a pleasure to get to know you all and to be able to share a wide variety of tips and advice when you needed it most. It is therefore with a heavy heart that I have decided to wind up TIPS Ltd as a business over the next few months. Our website ( will however remain live for the foreseeable future so that you can still access our evidence-based information, factsheets, Award reviews, FAQs and e-newsletters. We will of course erase all personal data about TIPS Parent Testers and TIPS members we currently have on our systems. However, you will still be able to contact me via our TIPSLtd facebook page or by email, if you would like me to help with any parenting issue you may have, especially if you need breastfeeding support. This has always been my greatest passion and I am so thrilled to have been able to guide so many new parents through the minefield of the first few weeks and months of establishing this sometimes tricky skill.

As you know my husband and I have two adorable grandchildren and we want to have the time to carry out our granny and granddad duties - this has become harder to fit in, while also running TIPS. You will also know that I cannot do anything in half measures so the time has come to move away from my TIPS desk and explore new horizons, whatever they may be...

Although this newsletter is more compact than usual, it is still packed full of great features and a few lovely giveaways for you to win...

Our final featured products are Green People (win 1 of 2 Organic Children Sun Lotion worth £38), Weleda Baby Calendula oil, which is celebrating its 60th Anniversary! (win 1 of 6 gift sets worth £120), Neuners teas4mum (win 1 of 2 gift sets worth £20) and a 3 months' supply of Jackson Reece Baby Wipes (worth £25), the most eco-friendly baby wipes available.

We also introduce you to the new eco-friendly, plant-based household cleaning brand: Nimble. Enter our mini-competition for a chance to win 1 of 2 Nimble Household Cleaning Gift Sets (worth £8.99 each) so you can try it out for yourself. Our featured DVD is the long awaited release of the film Tigers, which we have featured a few times. You also have the chance to win my personal copy, in our mini-competition.

We are delighted to promote a new website called The Breastfeeding Companion. This is the brainchild of Jackie Hal, an IBCLC and Infant feeding co-ordinator for Trafford NHS. Her aim is to provide free unbiased advice on breastfeeding issues and includes videos of Jackie addressing the issues that SO many breastfeeding mums have.

Our Top Treat is a wonderful idea by florist Freddie Garland (yes that really is his name!). He founded Freddie'sFlowers, a flower delivery that cuts out the middle man so you get top quality blooms that last much longer and no plastic wrapping! You can get yourself a free bouquet using my discount code and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Our Top Value product is the eco-friendly and totally natural latex TIPS ducky featured on our website. You can enter our mini-competition to win 1 of 10 ducks (worth £60).

As well as our regular mix of features, our latest My Story follows a mum who had a less than straightforward journey to breastfeeding including many sleepless nights and colic that refused to settle down.

We are delighted to showcase a wonderful selection of TIPS Testers' Pix for you to enjoy, including an amazing new 4D scan photo of twins age 26 weeks and a selection of my very favourite Testers pix over the past 15 years...  Check out our final selection to see if one of your photos is featured :-)

Last but not least I would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to all the companies we have featured including those who have offered us so many wonderful prizes, which you have had the chance to win over the years.

Speaking of prizes, we have some wonderful competitions for you to enter. Altogether our prizes are worth over £350 so email your entries to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   and you too could be a TIPS winner!

Remember if you are not 'in' you can't win!

Goodbye and thank you from Sharon, Brigitte and Michael

tipsducktipsducktipsduckfeatured book  Breastfeeding: the essential guide tipsducktipsducktipsduck

Read on for your chance to win 1 of 10 copies of Breastfeeding: the essential guide...

At the risk of self promotion I thought I would give you the chance to win 1 of 10 copies of my book, which will remain on sale on for the foreseeable future. The weaning section is outdated (baby-led-weaning was not promoted when I wrote this book!) but most of the advice, though 15 years old, is still just as relevant today. This is what I wrote about my book online in 2004:

This book is perfect for women thinking about breastfeeding or interested in finding out more. It is easy to read, non-judgemental and above all realistic.

There is a staggering array of breastfeeding books on the market. Much is written about the reasons why breastfeeding is unsuccessful. I believe that the successful establishment of breastfeeding is greatly improved by providing accurate information within a supportive environment. All advice needs to be easy-to-follow, evidence-based, non-judgemental, realistic and above all enthusiastically presented and fun to experience.

In many ways my book's development is analogous to the process of pregnancy and birth. Its conception took place in May 2002 when my youngest son, at 29 months old, was still breastfeeding. I started to write down my thoughts and tips about breastfeeding and this quickly developed, so that within three weeks I had the embryo of a book.

  • You can see pictures and read comments from readers of my book here...

tipsducktipsduckFeatured products 4 ::  Green People Organic Children Scent Free Sun Lotion SPF 30 : new and improved formula - £19 for 150mls  tipsduck

Why use this organic sun care product…

It’s a scent-free, natural children’s sun cream with new formula that:

  • absorbs in seconds!

  • offers 97% UVB protection (the rays that cause burning)

  • gives high protection against UVA and UVB rays

  • has a NEW easy-to-apply formula, suitable for sensitive skin & prickly heat

  • comes in NEW plant-based packaging, fully recyclable

  • is soothing and non-greasy

  • is water repellent but non pore-clogging

  • contains 84% organic content

Plant-based packaging
Ethical responsibility is at the heart of what Green People do. They are proud to present this reef-safe sun lotion in fully recyclable, renewable sugar cane packaging.  Farmed on sustainable land, this plant-based packaging is completely carbon-neutral.

30p donation to charity
Green People supports the Marine Conservation Society, the UK charity protecting our seas, shores and wildlife. They will donate 30p to the Marine Conservation Society from each sale of this product.

Things to remember when choosing a sun care product
People often think that an SPF50 sun lotion offers twice the protection of an SPF25, this is not the case.  Properly applied an SPF30 lotion offers 97% protection against UVB rays, while SPF50 offers 98% – a marginal 1% difference. The SPF factor doesn't indicate protection from UVA rays which cause the long term cell damage to the skin. To maintain protection from both UVA and UVB rays you need to re-apply sun care products regularly.

Here’s a list of ingredients you won't find in Green People Organic Children Sun Lotion:

Naturally No - SLS, SLES, methylisothiazolinone (MI), methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI), parabens, lanolin, phthalates, propylene glycol, alcohol (ethyl alcohol, ethanol), harsh foaming agents, irritating emulsifiers, synthetic fragrance, PABA-sunscreen, gluten, colourants, petrochemicals, urea, DEA, TEA or PEGs.

This product is suitable for people who may be prone to eczema and psoriasis.

tipsduck:: Featured website tipsducktipsducktipsduckThe Breastfeeding Companion  tipsduck tipsduck

Introduction by Sharon...

I recently added this website to our links page as I believe there is nowhere near enough free unbiased support for new mums trying to establish breastfeeding. The Breastfeeding Companion founder Jackie Hall aims to address this issue and I am delighted to promote her excellent work.

How it all began...

An IBCLC and Infant feeding co-ordinator for Trafford NHS, Jackie founded The Breastfeeding Companion off the back of a casual question her husband asked in June 2016. This resulting website provides support for mothers struggling with breastfeeding issues.

Jackie’s husband had asked ‘Do you get asked the same breastfeeding related questions week in and week out?’ Jackie’s answer had been ‘yes’. She immediately grabbed a pen and within 15 minutes, Jackie had written 88 questions!  A seed had been planted….

Over the following weeks, ideas were mapped out. It was decided a website should be built (conveniently, Jackie’s husband owns a website and digital marketing agency!). The website was to include videos of Jackie addressing the issues that SO many breastfeeding mums have. The aim was to make sure information was provided in a user friendly way.

One of the most important aspects of the website was to provide information completely free of charge. In the early days of the project Jackie and her husband had considered the option of creating a membership type site, but this never sat right.

Jackie said “I have worked in the NHS for the last 30 years and have supported thousands of women with many and varied breastfeeding challenges. It’s been heartening that the breastfeeding rates in Trafford have bucked the national trend, and have been steadily rising year on year. However, despite these very positive results, I’m aware that breastfeeding problems don’t stop at 5pm when I clock off!”
“Many women give up simply because the answer to their problem isn’t always easily found, especially when trawling the internet. There is a plethora of opinions and often information overload, and breastfeeding mothers need timely information and encouragement.

I really wanted to build a website to help all women, 24 hours a day, and I didn’t want money to get in the way of what I was most passionate about… helping women overcome their breastfeeding issues.”

When it comes to decisions about your health, having access to information you can trust is really important. This is why Jackie and her husband worked towards getting all the content on The Breastfeeding Companion site approved by The Information Standard.

“It was time consuming and at times a difficult process but we make a great team and it was amazing to finally get that endorsement from the NHS, after a very robust process which involved both peer and public reviews.’’

The website can be used to tackle immediate breastfeeding issues, but also, because the site is arranged into age-related sections, it can also be used in a preventative manner, helping to pre-empt and avoid potential difficulties at every stage of baby’s development. Knowledge is power!

The Breastfeeding Companion is being widely used across the English speaking world and Jackie has plans to further help breastfeeding mothers.

“We’re currently working to have the site translated - first into Arabic and then into Spanish. We’ve found there’s very little quality breastfeeding information outside of English, and so we’re working with overseas IBCLCs to help this situation.

We’ve also started working on a Chatbot, to help reach out to more people via Facebook. The main desire is that this resource will remain easily accessible and free for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.”

tipsducktipsducktipsduck  Featured Brand... Nimble tipsducktipsduck

About Nimble:

Nimble Founder Von Sy had spent 10 years working as a chemist for one the world’s leading consumer products companies when his first niece was born. Looking at the ingredients in some of the cleaning products used around his niece, he was shocked by how harsh some of these chemicals were.

More often than not, cleaning products are made with petroleum-based chemicals that have been heavily modified to deliver incremental improvements in lab tests. Von decided to make child-friendly cleaning products powered by plant-based ingredients handpicked for the things that need cleaning - and that’s where the idea for Nimble came from. Nimble believe household cleaning products don’t need to be overly formulated with heavy duty industrial ingredients that are potentially harmful and toxic - especially for young children.

Nimble are on a mission to unleash clean using plant based products which let babies grow, learn and play in safe environments.

The Nimble range includes:

  • Sticky Stopper: bleach-free antibacterial cleaner kills 99.9% of germs and is powered by plant-based cleaning ingredients

  • Milk Buster: baby bottle cleaner gently detaches milk fat and proteins from plastic;

  • Laundry Lover: detergent as good as the leading brand in stain removal but with 88% naturally-derived ingredients.  It gets rid of chocolate, tomato sauce, baby food, fruit juices, grass, mud, not to mention poo (after all, there’s little worse than having to throw away that beautiful new baby-grow after an explosive nappy-buster)!

Nimble’s award-winning, patented products are available in major retailers including Boots, Ocado and Amazon and are exported abroad.

What our Parent Tester thought of this new range…

Stains before washing clothes after using nimble products:

Nimble sent out a Household Cleaning Gift Set (see below to enter our mini-competition to win of two sets) to one of our Parent Testers so she could try it on her daughters' laundry.

Here's what she thought:

Nimble Laundry Lover: enough for 3 wash loads in 100ml bottle. First try was a white cottons wash at 40° with some tough orange and berry juice stains on some items that hadn't come out in previous wash. Whites came out fresh, bright and smelling great and, although the tough stains had not completely disappeared, they had faded significantly compared to before. I wondered whether increasing the temperature would have done the trick but by the time I went to use the product again, hubby had used the remainder of the bottle on two other wash loads - no comments / complaints from him or me on that front

Nimble Sticky Stopper: used 10% of 60 ml bottle to clean kitchen table. This removed sticky patches after meal time with a "baby led weaning" (i.e. no mess control) 16 month old. Table felt clean & fresh. It’s difficult to describe the smell of this spray: it’s fairly neutral, neither pleasant nor unpleasant.

Nimble Sticky Stopper is also handy for freshening up toys that have been handled by sticky hands. It’s reassuring to know that germs from surfaces likely to come into contact with babies' mouths have been removed without using any nasty chemicals

Nimble Milk Buster: I wish I had this product when I was having to express a lot of breastmilk for our daughter as it would have helped clean bottles and pump attachments really well. Now that she's 16 months old, I only express milk once a week during my longest shift at work. So the milk containers and pump attachments get washed after work and lie unused in a cool bag for another week. Before trying this product, I would always notice a distinct, unpleasant smell (a bit like off milk) upon opening the clean/empty bottle at work each week and always felt the need to re-wash it before expressing milk into it. Since trying this product, I no longer have that problem: 2 sprays out of the 60ml bottle each week do the trick

I heard about this film back in 2014 when it started its limited release around film festivals. I am glad to see that Tigers will soon be more widely available around the world.  tipsducktipsduck:: Top Treat  :Freddie's Flowers :: tipsducktipsduck

On a recent visit to London I came across a girl in the street showing off lots of gorgeous flowers on a bicycle, offering me the chance to sign up to Freddie’s Flowers’ fresh flower delivery service. It sounded great but I was not ready to sign up on the spot so I took the details and decided to check out their website and Facebook page. A few weeks later I noticed Freddie’s Flowers’ half price offer on facebook and decided to subscribe. As you can see from the photos above, the flowers that were delivered to me were well worth the money. I am pleased to report that these fresh flowers lasted over two weeks. I do not get flowers delivered every week (it's easy to just pause your delivery online) but I expect to order them about once a month. I love flowers and this is a great way to learn more about them.  Each delivery includes everything you need to make a perfect bouquet with detailed instructions (and a photo) of what your display should look like. You even get an explanation of exactly what flowers you have and how best to look after them. I can't wait to see what comes through the post next and I'm also delighted that all the packaging is paper or card, so no nasty plastic wrapping! It would also make a great present for someone special. You can never have too many fresh flowers!

About Freddie (founder of Freddie’s Flowers) ...

It's hard to believe but Freddie's surname is actually Garland (yes really!) so you could say he was perfectly placed to start a business selling fresh flowers. In fact he grew up helping his parents in their flower shop in Pimlico, London. He also spent time working with the Abel & Cole, the vegetable box service. However, he soon realised he wanted to start his own business and so Freddie’s Flowers was born. Freddie's passion for flowers is palpable and has got him noticed all over.

Recently Freddie was invited to be a guest on Holly Tuckers (founder of notonthehighstreet) podcast: ‘Conversations of Inspiration’. You can listen to Freddies’s emotional interview here.....

What’s up duck?

When I decided to start my own company and self- publish my book in 2004, I could never have imagined how long this journey would last. My company name 'Trotters Independent Publishing Services' was the obvious choice as my name is Trotter, my project was definitely independent and I was publishing my own book. It also contains many useful tips, which is how T.I.P.S. was born! Now for the logo! Why a duck?
As well as my passion for breastfeeding, my other interest has been to look into baby skincare. To this end I have spent years researching and writing about these subjects and have been published in professional journals (see publications link below). My proposed new guidelines for babycare are now policy within my local NHS Board and many other maternity units are following this lead. TIPS Ltd is a stakeholder with the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) whose revised Postnatal Care Guidelines (2014) recommends that cleansers/baby wipes no longer be used on newborn skin. I will continue to spread the word to parents and healthcare professionals throughout the UK and beyond. You can read about all my work on the TIPS website and on my sister site for health professionals:
Obviously a duck is synonymous with bathing, which is why I chose it as my logo. Although breastfeeding and neonatal skincare are serious subjects, it is vital for me to add an element of humour in everything I do! 'Trotters Independent' has a certain ring about it, I think you will agree, and the duck gives it an extra fun factor!

As you can see from the pictures above our duckie has been all over the world including Northern Ireland (The Giants Causeway), China (The Great Wall), Mont Blanc, New York (The 911 Memorial Fountains) and many more places...

If you know about TIPS then you know how keen we are to promote eco-friendly, low carbon companies who take their green credentials seriously. With this in mind, we replaced our old artificial PVC duckie with a new 100% natural latex rubber TIPS duckie.

You can buy this cute little latex duckie (plus toys and gifts!)  in a multitude of colours, shapes and sizes from Spanish company Lanco Toys (

Check out our final selection to see if one of your photos is featured :-)

TIPS bump and scan

Here is an amazing 4D scan picture of twins age 26 weeks. ETA, August 2019...

Mum of twins seen in the 4D scan above is Lorna, who is also featured in the family section pix.

TIPS bump 2

Here is mum to be Niki, pregnant with twins, as seen in newsletter 14.

TIPS bump 3

This is one supple mum-to-be! Here we see professional dancer, acrobat and circus performer Desiree balancing gracefully on the arms of her husband Martin. Desiree was eight months pregnant at the time of this exceptional photo shoot featured back in newsletter 15.

TIPS bump 4

Here is Natalie (our very first TIPS Tester) showing off her perfectly formed bump back in October 2006, as seen in newsletter 16.

TIPS bump 5

This photo (from newsletter 42) shows our happy couple Russell and Amanda at her 30th Birthday party when they chose a unique way to announce their exciting news to family and friends: check out the badges they are wearing!

TIPS baby 1

This adorable picture of Nicole (featured in newsletter 3) was taken after a satisfying breastfeed. Nicole is now 12 years old and I have used this picture in many presentations over the years - definitely one of my all time favourites!

TIPS baby 2

I just love this smiley face of baby Harshiv as seen in newsletter 9 in 2008

TIPS baby 3

This is the first incredible picture of baby Ashleigh with her mum just minutes after delivery. At 29 weeks and weighing only 1.12kg she was a tiny little miracle, as seen in newsletter 13.

TIPS baby 4

Thank you to mum Francoise who shared this picture (featured in newsletter 21) of herself just minutes after the natural water birth of baby Clara - we think the smile says it all!

TIPS baby 5

This must be the most innovative way to photograph a new baby, as seen in newsletter 22. Here is Amelia age 2 months old in a line up with the dolls her Mum uses to demonstrate feeding positions and soothing techniques in her baby classes.

 TIPS baby 6

I just love the summery feel of this picture (featured in newsletter 23) showing baby Benin the paddling pool with his mum – looks like bliss!

TIPS baby 7

Welcome to the world! (as seen in newsletter 23) Here are twin girls Isis and Jelena, new baby Granddaughters to my good friend Mary who lives in Australia while her daughter and son-in-law live in New York City.

TIPS Baby 8

Here is baby Freddie - just 23 hours old! He is the first grandson of our Brigitte as seen in newsletter 25.

TIPS baby 9

Here is my first grandchild, Mia age 3 weeks in an artistic shot by daddy, as seen in newsletter 35.

TIPS Baby 10

Here is baby Matilda, 3rd daughter of Kelly, who I have known since she volunteered as a TIPS Parent Tester in 2007. She went on to write a series of articles called 'Diary of a Student Midwife' (newsletters 18-28) which followed her journey to become a fully qualified midwife.

TIPS Toddler

This was the very first toddler featured in newsletter number 1 in 2008. Jake has the most beautiful piercing blue eyes which is what I fell for and still find enchanting.

TIPS Siblings 1

This is  picture of big sister Nicole (our featured baby no1) and her new baby brother Brendan as seen in newsletter 18.

TIPS Siblings 2

Brother and sister Sefi and Izzy enjoying a seat in the woods. Their mummy is our featured bump number 4 and this was first seen in newsletter 25.

TIPS Siblings 3

Here are two big sisters Ruby and Rosie, introducing their new baby sister Matilda (our featured baby no.10) as seen in newsletter 43.

 TIPS Family 1

We loved this smiley family picture of daddy with Joel, Anisa and Alanna in 2011 and we still do!

 TIPS Family 2

Here is mum Lorna (also our featured 4D scan of twins) with her lovely family including dad Kevin and sons Dean, Lewis and Adam, all looking forward to welcoming twins in August. We wish them every happiness as their family of 5 increases to 7!

 TIPS Granny

This is me featured in newsletter 40 with my adorable granddaughter Mia when she was 2 years old.

 TIPS Dad 1

Here is a very proud dad Simon wearing his daughter Sophia back in 2013 in newsletter 32.

 TIPS Dad 2

Heres a delightful picture of new Dad and fireman Martin, holding his daughter Sadie in his fireman’s helmet! We first featured this in newsletter 39.

 TIPS Dad 3

As soon as I saw this photo I wanted to use it and I think you'll agree it has that WOW factor. This was featured in newsletter 41 in 2017.

 TIPS Dad 4

We featured this lovely picture of my son-in-law Jan in newsletter 42 in 2017. He is enjoying a relaxing cuddle with my grandson Odin age 6 months old.

 TPS Breastfeeder 1

This picture of me with my youngest son was taken in 2002 and featured in newsletter 17. It was one of the last feeds we shared together before he self-weaned. There are never enough pictures of older babies feeding which is why I decided to go public with this treasured shot.

 TIPS Breastfeeder 2

Here is wee Rachael breastfeeding her dolly age 2 years. She was herself still breastfeeding so she knew exactly what to do. This was featured in 2010 in newsletter 20.

 TIPS Breastfeeder 3

This is one of a few stunning professional photos taken by Jade Beall© and featured in newsletter 34 in 2014. I particularly liked this one as it shows milk dripping from mums other breast as she is feeding. You can see Jades innovative work here...

 TIPS Breastfeeder 4

We featured this gorgeous picture of my granddaughter Mia age 11 months in newsletter 38.

 TIPS Breastfeeder 5

Here's a brand new shot of my daughter feeding my grandson Odin age 19 months. Love this as they look so cosy together in their wee breastfeeding bubble.

 TIPS Breastfeeder 6

These photos show Amanda (our featured bump 5) feeding her daughter Elia 11 months apart, at a zoo in Valencia.

In the UK it is rare to see mums openly breastfeeding toddlers but in Spain this is much more common place, just as it should be ;O)
