TIPS-tested Dribblebuster® bib
- 2009

This jaunty little version of a traditional bib (with double cotton layer including absorbent fleece) is the result of Alison’s extensive work fine-tuning the original design. An experienced dressmaker, Alison wants the Dribblebuster® to be of the highest quality and she personally oversees the manufacture of each handcrafted bib. All Dribblebusters® are made in the UK.
Comments were extremely positive. Most Testers were surprised that such an ingenious product was available. With such positive feedback, I did not hesitate to give the Dribblebuster® a TIPS Clever design award.
A new bib has just been added to the range: the Dribblebuster® plus version that is larger and has a waterproof backing especially designed for babies with special needs.

Dribblebuster® does exactly what its name suggests. A traditional bib might help to keep your baby dry, but it can also spoil the look of their lovely outfits - particularly on special occasions. Ideally, we would buy a matching bib for every outfit, but this is just not practical.

With over 25 fabrics to choose from, the Dribblebuster® will complement any outfit, keeping your baby dry in the most stylish way possible.

Testers liked the size of the Dribblebuster®. It is small enough to look neat and big enough to catch the dribbles, keeping the clothing (and of course the baby’s delicate skin) beneath the bib dry. The Dribblebuster® is easy to fit: it sits snugly around the neck. The Velcro fastening is easy to adjust, but some Testers commented that they would like the bib to be available with poppers too.
Testers found that as well as being very easy to wash and dry, the Dribblebuster® became more absorbent with each wash. They also liked the fact that this bib could be used back to front to match a particular outfit.

Here are some of the Testers’ comments:

  • It kept her clothes dry and free from dribble
  • The size is ideal as it does not cover too much of my daughter’s clothing
  • The fabric is lovely and soft, especially the backing
  • Easy to wash and air-dried quickly
  • The bib soaked up the dribble but the bib itself did not look wet
  • Helps to prevent rash especially in the neck creases
  • It did save on outfit changes after a few washes
  • People have asked me what my baby was wearing because they liked it so much

Our aim at TIPS is to source the best products currently available. Where a product is quite unique, we will set up a one-off trial - we ran such trials for the Kamillosan thermometer soother and the Shampoo Rinse Cup. Both products proved popular with Testers.

We decided to test the Dribblebuster® because it is unique and also because it provides a solution to a common problem: a dribbly baby.

We recruited ten Parent Testers with babies aged between four and eight months and sent them a Dribblebuster® to test - making sure the colour was suitable for the sex of each baby. Testers were asked to read the following instructions before testing:

  • Please use the product for at least two weeks before completing the questionnaire.
  • The ideal age for this product is 4-8 months but it is equally useful for newborns, babies suffering from reflux or toddlers who are especially dribbly.
  • Take care when fastening the bib to avoid any part of the Velcro from touching your infant’s skin.
  • If you iron your Dribblebuster® please remember to avoid ironing the Velcro fasteners.
  • Please read the manufacturer’s information supplied with your sample before you begin testing.

Completing the questionnaire

Testers were asked to record their comments in a questionnaire. There are four sections in the questionnaire:
  • The product: in this section, we ask about the design of the product and quality of information provided online and on pack.
  • Use of product: this includes questions about ease of use; implications for reducing rashes and skin conditions associated with dribbling; comparison with more conventional bibs; and questions about its potential to be eco-friendly due to a reduction in use of extra clothes as a result of wetness.
  • Feedback: in this section, testers are asked to comment on their favourite features, suggest improvements, and whether they believe the product provides good value.
  • Awards: in this section testers are asked to suggest an award for the product.
As you can see, there are many aspects of design to assess when testing this seemingly simple product. A well-designed bib should:
  • help to keep the babies neck dry
  • help to reduce the need to constantly change outfits
  • help to limit the amount of laundry due to wetness, and
  • above all look good and allow outfits to be shown-off in the best way possible.
